Questions for 10/22 owners [mods]

Need your help answering small and fast lil questions

Lets say,
on a new, bought in june 2012, Ruger 10/22-FS Black Synthetic Tactical, which is the lightest of them all according to Ruger.com ( 4.30 LBS )

1) I was interested in a Volquartsen Automatic Bolt Release, are the newer Rugers already auto-bolt release default from the factory ?
2) Would you recommand the Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor ? how bad can a default factory extractor be :) ?
3) If replacing the trigger add accuracy, im feeling forced to do it.. is once again Volquartsen the way to go ?
4) Instead of the tactical model of Ruger 10/22.. should i stick with something that have a iron sight too.. in case of scope failure ?

I want to keep the rifle light, so no bull barrel i guess on this light 10/22 build.

No auto bolt release, unless something changed in the last few months
Havent used an edge extractor, happy with the factory one
You could go volquartsen on the trigger, or buy a more expensive trigger group. Myself, Im going to try the target hammer to lighten the pull (its only about 50 bucks)
and its your call on the sights, my sr does not have iron sights but have not had a problem with my scope yet either good luck
 
Polishing the hammer/trigger/sear can be done yourself as well. Just need some fine grit emery cloth and smooth out the milling marks. Makes a pretty nice difference.
 
if you know how to use a file you can get a nice smooth, light trigger for free. Take a fine jeweler's file to all the contact areas to knock down the machining marks, then slowly decrease the engagement angle on the hammer to reduce pull weight. The aftermarket drop-in hammers are just machined smooth with a slightly reduced sear engagement angle to do the same thing. For even better performance you can go as far as polishing, JB weld mod to eliminate take-up and D&T the trigger guard for a set screw overtravel stop. In most cases a light filing makes a huge difference that I myself am happy with. Just remember you are knocking down the machining marks, not removing material from contact areas. For the hammer, it only takes a little decrease in angle to make a noticeable difference so take a little at a time, then reassemble and test. If you fcuk it up then just buy a drop-in hammer :D
 
All you are forgetting is a promag rubber butt pad to replace the super slippery hard plastic one on there.
And also a bolt buffer.
You can get both items from Hical.

My use of the Ruger is more while camping and survival trip, hunting small game, little bit of protection, its not a running gun battles, its more a trip-fell-knock the scope on a tree, something like that when i say "scope failure"
 
to all of you who suggested manual adjustment over buying modded piece.. keep in mind that i dont have any experience yet with modding Rugers (but I will and i appreciate the tips)

When I say replacing the trigger, can I just buy the whole Volquartsen mechanism in 1 piece (Automatic Bolt Release, Extractor, trigger, Extended Bolt handle) so i dont have to worry about messing up the componants ?
 
Check out Brimstone Gunsmithing (US) for your trigger. He has 3 tiers of trigger service, I chose the middle one. He does a great job and you can choose your trigger pull weight, within reason. Just take out your trigger group, put it in a ziploc bag, then a small box and send it off. A couple weeks later you get it back ready to drop in.

I didn't have any experience either, watched a couple of disassembly videos on youtube, and went at 'er. At least for the bolt release, it isn't worth forking out the $$ for a name. It is extraordinarily easy to do yourself. There are even step by step instructions in the 10/22 tips thread. So much more satisfying knowing that you worked on your rifle yourself, rather than just swapping out parts, where reasonable. When I go to the range and people come oogle my SR-22 they ask about X part and X part from X company. When I tell them I did some of the mods myself, or in the case of a bolt buffer, bought the material to make my own, I get odd looks from people. Like 'why didn't you buy the Adidas trigger".

This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine....
 
I found YouTube a great assistance when I did my own mods. I even did my trigger myself and was pleased with the final result. I do have a timney trigger group coming but did this to just see if I could. The auto bolt release can be done very easily with a rotary tool or in my case a small set of jewelers files.
