I am an X military Member looking to get into some target shooting.
( Not Military rifles )

I am very comfortable with the sport, just not that familiar with all the types of rifles out there. The question I am asking is,what would be the best rifle and scope combination to buy for this sport. I am looking at shooting anything from 100 yards to 500 PLUS the thing is I would like to have one rifle to be able to do both short and long shooting, without having to buy two rifles.

Thanks in advance

Im partial to the 243 for this application although it is a little more expensive to shoot than the 223.

note that the answer may depend on what type of shooting you want to do... what I mean is, some classes of rifle competition have restrictions on weight, caliber, etc...
do you want to compete, or are you just having fun?
if you are competing, do you know what type of competition?

I love my LTR in .308...but...

My first rifle was a savage 12VSSF in .223

Can't beat Savage for accuracy, and the new accu-trigger is adjustable with virtually no creep.

The plastic stocks will torque though if you plan on shooting with a sling.

WHat I find amazing is people that spend $700 and up on a rifle, but then put $100 optics on it.

Buy a good scope that holds its zero or you will be cursing.

My rule of thumb is spend minimum 50% on a scope that your rifle cost you.

A moderate priced scope include Nikon Buckmaster series, Leupold vx-2 and the Bushnell Elite series.

Best bang for your buck....fixed power.

I like variables......

4-12 x 40mm is able to see the small .22cal holes in paper, gathers enough light, and does not need high mounts.

Higher magnification is nice but unless you have good optics, you will lose a lot of light, and price is also a factor.

Target turrets a must, side focus for the CDI factor (Chicks Dig It!)

long range bases will also give you more out of your scope for elevation.

I was in your position at one time John. I'm ex-mil and I wanted to get into shooting at the same distances you mentioned. I went with a Savage 12FVSS and I'm loving it. I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 on the way (5-15x) that didn't break the bank at $300 used, but was just a little less then half the cost of the rifle.

Have you considered reloading?

Remington 700 / .308 cal / Fixed 10x quality glass target scope

Very capable & high quality within mid price range option

I've got the best suggestion here..........

Got to your local range, make friends and try all of their guns,,,,, buy the one you like the most that,ll suit your purpose.

Probably end up with (not getting into specialty rifles and parts) $700-1100 gun and $450 - 750 scope.

Check out the bushnells, leupolds etc. Bushnells scopes are damn near the best bang for the buck.
