Usually this is where Cantom and Wheaty fill us in...I just bought an EAL with about 95% bluing and clean original wood finish, 4 digit serial number (60XX) and is not drilled and tapped on the left side of the receiver. Bore is 5 groove rifling and is like new. The right side of the receiver has a 50`s period correct all steel Lyman peep sight. The knoxform is proof marked. Knoxform, front sight, trigger guard bottom plate, cocking piece, and bolt handle are all "C" with and "A" within it marked. Bolt head is a "0" and is LB marked. Still has the Jostam anti-flinch buttpad on it in good condition. It comes with a 5 round magazine that has a faint CA marking on the rear of the magazine. I`ve had two of these in the past with 10 round magazines and the Enfield peep on the rear and not the slotted knoxform with the flip type sight. Is this a commercial, or military version? Was the Lyman sight a common add on to Rangers, a factory addition, or is this a bubba? (seems very well done). What kind of values are these bringing currently?
Wow...that is a beauty! Looks virtually perfect and brand new!
It has to be worth all of $600 in original trim... Maybe more but the market gets small up there.
Now, I have never seen one with a Lyman sight on it before. Presumably there are drilled and tapped holes there to mount it? Too bad if so...but the rifle is in such perfect shape. The rear barrel mounted 200/400 yard flip sight is changed out too. That is too bad. Looks like one leaf is gone or both changed out to 1 different one.
It's up in the military s/n range and has the mil features as laid out by Warren Wheatfield in his EAL article. They are much rarer than the earlier s/n commercial range with the Mk II flip sight at the rear.
I've seen them with the DCP proof on the right of the chamber and seen them without.
The 2 mods will affect the price but the top condition will help.
Thanks Cantom for the info. The DCP proof is on the right of the chamber, but my photograph doesn`t show it very well. Nice to know it`s in the military batch of serial numbers too.
Your EAL is the military version. The rear peep sight is a non military addition. The 200/400 blade sight on the knox form has been replaced with a Lyman fold down. Well worth putting back to original. Holes drilled for peep sight can be plug so they're not noticable. Occasionally see the 2 blade sight for sale however pricey. Ron
I have an unusual EAL rifle that has an interesting providence. I purchased this rifle from the nephew of Fred Kearsey. At that time, Fred was in failing heath and his nephew (a colleague of mine) offered the rifle to me.
Fred was one of the "founding fathers" of Longbranch. He helped arrange the setting up of the factory and getting the equipment necessary.
Fred continued at Longbranch after the war into the 1950's. He eventually left Longbranch and went to Winchester Arms.
Prior to his leaving Longbranch, a rifle was especially made and presented to him.
