Just acquired a 700SPS action which will be the base for my first custom rifle. Just looking for some tips and input.

Here is the list so far
-700SPS lefty action with .308 bolt face (Will be trued) Possibly flute the bolt? I love that look.
-1:9 or 1:10 medium-ish weight 7mm barrel and have it chambered in 7mm-08 and finished at 20" (Not sure about brand)
-Need a recoil lug of some sort (ATRS?)
-PTG AICS bottom metal, already have a few mags for my gunsite scout rifle
-PTG bolt handle and knob (Straight or swept back?)
-Talley one piece 0 MOA rail with Leupold PRW rings
-Need a stock of some sort, leaning towards a Bell and Carlson if they can be inlet for a slightly heavier barrel and the DBM
-Finish the whole rig off with Cerakote

I want to do this right, but try not to completely break the bank as I have twins on the way haha. Any input is appreciated, I'd like to find Canadian brands and suppliers for as much of it as I can, within reason. I'm looking for a good accurate gun but don't plan on shooting super long range, this is going to be primarily a hunting rifle used for fun paper punching. Let me know what you think!

I would recommend going with a faster twist barrel. A 1-8" twist will stabilize everything. Gary has Benchmark barrels and I am very happy with mine.

Why are you changing the bolt handle? If you are trying to save some costs I would skip on that and allocate more funds to a better stock and rings/bases. I would still do the bolt knob though.

You can get good TPS rings and some bases online - PM for some info.

Maybe look at the Grayboe stocks. They are new but from what I have seen online they look to be good. They have one in a McM A5 profile that looks good.

Thanks for the input! Ive been checking out more info on barrels and I'm gonna rule out the 1:10 right now, I won't be shooting the real heavy bullets right now, I have no intention of going really long range and if I'm hunting something that requires a heavier bullet I have other guns for that. The bolt handle and knob seemed like a pretty cheap upgrade to me that would add a lot to the look of the gun, I'll look more into that though, I don't know what's involved with changing the handle so I'll take to YouTube.

I'll have a look at the ring/base options, the Talley/Leupold looked pretty good for my purposes but I'll do some research.

I don't know much about the stocks so I'll definitely check the Grayboe out. I'm pretty open at this point, I'd prefer a more traditional-ish rifle stock instead of the big fancy specialized chassis.

A guy over on AO had a Grayboe sent up.

Looks like he got it for less than $500 and it appears nicer than a B&C. You can order them inlet for the M5 DBMs.

PM me for more details.

If your going to use mostly for hunting I would go with a lighter traditional hunting style stock and add a cheek riser. Here is a pic of my 30-06. It's my go to hunting Rifle and is quite nice to target shoot as well. It's a Remington xcr2 in a bell and Carlson stock with a TAC pro cheek riser.
