I’m sure these things have been asked by many but I was hoping for a quick reply. I’m going to sign my 16 year old up for black badge this march. The guy putting on the course said no serpa holsters. I have a walther serpa holster that came with my gun. If I remove the lock tab by cutting it off and reassembling it, will that satisfy the requirements for the course and competition?

Second question. How many magazine carriers do I need? And where is a good shop to get some of this stuff? I have 3 mags and a double carrier so I think I’ll have to order at least two more mags and another two carriers?

Ghost holsters out of the US usually has some great deals on complete packages

With no tab, does the Serpa retain the pistol? Most holsters with no retainer utilize compression. x2 on the Ghost.
5 mags is a safe number.
I can draw and holster it one handed and it has a tension screw on the side to tighten or loosen the clamping force. As is I can dump the holstered gun upside down and it doesn’t fall out unless I shake it.

We’re just getting our feet wet to see how it goes. I don’t see us getting super serious unless they change the gun laws. This walther ppx is the only thing I have that’s remotely suitable to shoot in competition.

The rule book specifies no serpa holster. The rule book does not say say well serpa holster is ok with the locking mechanism removed.

Max round count on stage is 32 so you need at least 4 mags 5 mags is better. Need More mags then that well you are not winning the competition anyway. There are a few suppliers.

freedom venture, crafm montreal wolverine supplies double alpha.

But before spending a ton of money on a hobby that your child will not likely become passionate about consider getting set up as cheaply as you can with ali express.

Lots of people are interested in IPSC, some even take the black badge. A few go to a couple local competitions and its the rare bird that becomes passionate about the sport spending their time and most of their money on it.

I introduced both my children to it.

Get a proper holster for IPSC Competition and ditch the sherpa. There are a few vendors that you can get a decent holster for both IDPA and IPSC if your son decides to go that way. Grayfox Strategic (Ottawa Based), Doubletap (you can get ghost and bladetech) it was already mentioned freedom ventures, crafm montreal, wolverin etc.

Bladetech will be your more accessible when it comes to pricing, but my suggestion is to go with something a bit better: Ghost, Black Scorpion Gear.

Good Luck.

I see you tested and it doesn't fall out. It should work for now or till you want to upgrade. I didn't have the best gear when I started out 20 plus years ago.

As for mags. 5 mags is standard.

My wife is also looking to do some IPSC and get her Black Badge and shoots a PPX, are you shooting the same gun? If so please let me know what holster you decide on and how it works for you. I was able to find some mags on Town Post… from a guy in North Vancouver. PM me and I will forward his contact information.

See what the folks at your club use. They may be able to set you up with loaned mags and pouches for the Black Badge course and you can decide what works and where to get it.

It does not specify no Sherpa type holsters in 5.2.6 or 5.2.7.

IPSC Canada sent out a safety notification that bans all Sherpa type holsters where a release mechanism requires to be activated with the trigger finger..

Rule 5.2.6 does state that if a holster is deemed unsafe by a Range Master it cannot be used unless the unsafe condition can be corrected. In the case the unsafe release mechanism has been removed. Providing it has enough retention, which the op indicated it does, it should be able to be used if this modified state. This would be dependant on the range masters agreement it is now safe.

OP contact the Black Badge instructor and see what they think. No need to buy a holster if the instructor will allow the one you have to be used.

Depending on the Instructor, You may be allowed to take the course with the Serpa Holster, That was the case with my instructor. (Tony Dube). That being said he did recommend that I get a different holster as IPSC was just in the transition stages of disallowing the Serpa holster.
I personally run Double Alpha Holster and Mag pouches on my Belt. Contact Jim at Azone he may be able to help you set you up with some gear. You will also want to run a competeition belt. It has an inner belt with velcro and a stiff outer belt that attaches to your inner belt with velcro. A must in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have one more question.

How often do you guys damage magazines? I found some and they seem hard to come by so I was going tk order two for a total of five, but I’m thinking I should get an extra one or two if they’re going to be dropped in the dirt and gravel
All the time.

Removing that lock probably uncovers the trigger guard which is a no go.

I've been running the same CZ mags for my Shadow for over 10 years without breaking anything. Used an M&P and XD for at least 2 years each also with no breakage. And winter matches/practice are on concrete. Rather than get an extra mag, maybe just get an extra floor plate?

They last quite a long time if you don't stomp on them on your way to the next array. Going skateboard on one on a smooth concrete floor can be spectacular too. Sort of roll the pistol so the magwell points left or right lets you dump the mag in the direction you're not about to run.

I've shot 60 plus matches, and at least 70k rounds with the same cz magazines, they all still feed reliably.

Countless drops on the ground, even some stepping on them and kicking them while running full speed.
