Been looking for a nice varmint rifle in 25-06, found it today, Cooper Varmint, it was ordered then the guy backed out, waiting time from Cooper is 2yrs. My question is regerding the chambering which is 25-06 Ackley Improved. Have read, heard several things about this cartridge. I was told I can shoot factory ammo and it will perform reasonably well and give me fireformed brass that wont need any neck turning, other story is I have to neck down 270 brass, trim and ream necks, then fire form with mild loads. I have reloaded extensively in the past and will be getting back into it but my exp is limited to reloading for factory ammo. If any one out there can shed some light on what I am getting into with this sort of wild cat I would apperciate it.
Can't believe my luck finding this rifle, was going to get a Sako varminter till i found out they don't make the long action any more and I always wanted a Cooper.

25-06 Ackley Improved

cc878,

I have been doing the 'cream of wheat' thing for my 25-06 AI. Hope too do load development after hunting season. The WW bulk 25-06 brass w/ pistol powder worked great. None of that necking down/reaming/turning required.

A proper AI chambering will allow you to fire the standard round. The one I've got is a real 'crush' fit though.

Grab that Cooper!!

I just use 25-06 loads and fireform them at that time. There doesn't seem to be enough difference in accuracy to worry about. Although I only use the fireforming rounds for target practice. They usually shoot slightly lower, not that much difference in velocity between the standard and the wildcat. Have fun. bearhunter
