So the father of a friend of mine's wife (that was a mouthful) passed away this summer and among the other things he left them was this Remington Model 31 12 guage shotgun. Neither of them having their PALs, gentleman that I am, I took it off their hands. I had never seen or heard of this model of shotgun that predates the 870 prior to this. Anyways, it shoots fine, cycles no problem and suits my needs just fine except for 2 things: there seems to be no provisions or obvious way of mounting a sling and the length of pull for me is longer than I like (it's ok for a bladed stance but I prefer to shoot more squared up). What are my otions? Will 870 accessories work with it? Is there an easy way of mounting a sling that I'm overlooking (it's mainly the front mounting point that I'm unsure of, it's easy to put an adapter that wraps around the butt stock like for a 3 point sling out back) Any and all help appreciated!

Is that an actual riot gun version of the 31 or a homemade job? The butt and recoil pad sure don't look original. But if it's a guard's gun it could be worth some money.

BTW, I forgot to add that the model 31 is probably the slickest, finest pump gun ever made. Win 12 owners may argue, but it's there.

I have one and they are a slick operating shotgun.

No accessories for an 870 work on the Model 31. Total different design.

Check the barrel markings. Could be a Model 31R ( Riot Grade ). If so values run the same as standard models.

If it's an altered gun the choke markings should be on the rear left of the barrel.

My guess from what one can try to make out is a Home made jobbie. Looks out of the riot gun serial number range 51,000-63,500.
Redone at one time for sure, stock higher grade wood probally off a skeet version and missing plastic pad.
Barrel would have CYL on left side and after serial numbers pending US etc early would have RLB late FJA with burning bomb proof , some US property and others just CL with anchor proof.
Cannot see any of that on it. I might be wrong also since not 100% up to speed on these anymore so please correct me
With you rem 3200 have a couple 31's left and by far the smoothest of all pumps

To the OP congrats they are great guns so use and enjoy yours

Thanks so much for all the help and advice. I was curious as well, would this shotgun cycle 3" shells as well as 2 3/4? I couldn't find a stamping on the barrel but the heat shield is stamped for both although it appears that the 3" stamping was somehow filled in or sanded down?

Forget the heat shield that is not part of that gun. I have never seen a 3" model 31 might be wrong but seem to recall Remington was apparently unable, or unwilling, to make a Model 31 for the 12-gauge 3-inch Magnum shell.
Also here is why I say yours was redone. Top is an original alloy receiver 31 or aeromet as they called it bottom is a steel 31. Yours to me was done with a vintage hoppes home bluing kit which gave that color and finish. Doesn't hurt it as a shooter but little interest to collectors. Enjoy the gun
