I am looking to buy a 44 mag revolver for basic outdoor range fun. I want a trouble free accurate gun and was wondering which type was the strongest and most reliable. Double action or single action ? I don't really have a need to pull off shots in quick succession so a single action would work for me. What i want is strength ( I like those full power loads), reliability, and longevity. The Ruger single actions have caught my eye.

All oppinions welcome.

I own 4 Rugers at the moment so my opinions are kind of biased ;). But a model 629 Smith is also a nice choice.

I myself would stick with a Super Blackhawk or a Redhawk in .44 mag, both are very well built and can take the healthiest handloads with out a problem.

For strength & reliablity, a Ruger single action.

For a really nice trigger, a 629. the newer ones (629-3 and above) apparently have a much longer life between mandatory maintenance sessions than the older ones.

don't have a ruger double action so can't tell but they have a reputation for being quite strong

I've heard Rugers can handle a hotter handload, and Rugers are generally built like a tank.

Smith & Wesson's revolvers are really nice and as stated above have a nice trigger.

If you want something in double-action, which I find more convenient for unloading, I'd steer you towards a Smith & Wesson model 629. If you're interested in a nostalgic sort of cowboy gun or ever think you'll be interested in Cowboy Action shooting, a single action Ruger will be the way to go for you.

Ruger also makes double-action revolvers which I hear are quite nice... so really, the best thing to do is to go to a shop and handle as many as you can and see which fits the hand best, compare triggers and actions to see what you really like. Optimally, find someone with one or the other and ask if you can put a few rounds through it.

If you don't mind a used gun you could also consider a Dan Wesson 44 mag, I have had mine for about 20 years and it is still going strong with a diet of mainly magnum loads. You can't go wrong with a Ruger or Smith & Wesson either, I have owned both and they are very good revolvers as well.

Ruger Super Blackhawk (with Bisley grip) or Redhawk. Myself I'm partial to single actions but after seeing Crazy Davey's post with his 4 1/2" stainless Redhawk I might be forced to get one someday!

these ruger single actions are about as tough a gun as you can find for the money. this one is in .44 mag....
