I've been asked by my club to run a Winter Skeet League this winter and am curious how I register it with NSSA. We've run a yearly trap league for years, I send in a request to the ATA giving them the dates of the league and at the end I register the targets. Does it work the same way with the NSSA? Does the league have to be 4 gauge? Are the targets registered monthly?

You have a few options for this.

Years back, the NSSA ran/oversaw a winter league. You would keep track of the targets over the course of the event and submit at the end. I don't think they run this anymore though.

You still have a number of choices.

First off, you need to decide how you want to run your league. It can be registered targets or not. It could be registered for those who want to register, and not for those who don't.

There is no requirement to actually register the targets with the NSSA, although that could be a draw for some shooters.

It does not have to be all 4 gauges unless you want it to be that way.

I think that the easiest way to do this currently is to use the monthly targets option. You simply record Name/NSSA number/Class/Score and submit that at the end of the month.

There is a classification called 'Event 6' which pretty much lets you 'count' targets any way that you would like. The targets count towards a shooters lifetime totals, but not towards any individual event.

I know the NSSA is working on a new 'event' which may work as well, but I don't know if it is quite ready to be deployed yet.

I'll check with some people to see if they have any better ideas as I focus more on the summertime events rather than the off season options.

Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss further.

Brad.

Quite interesting. If I read this correctly the NSSA allows non NSSA shooters to compete in registered events alongside NSSA members and not have to register targets and/or shooters must be NSSA members and have the option to shoot an event and choosing whether or not to register the targets shot?

Don't read quite that much into it. If you choose to host a league and offer shooters the opportunity to register their targets, you may do so.

Would the NSSA prefer that all shooters everywhere register their birds? Sure.
Are they going to turn away event results because non-registered shooters were allowed to participate? No.
Will you find a rule that explicitly says that is allowed? Probably not.

Ahh ok. That is quite interesting. Been a long time since I read the ATA rule book but it seems to me there is a rule in it prohibiting non ATA members from participating in any ATA sanctioned events?

Is there a reason you NEED to have it registered?
It's just that the winter season impedes on our scores.
Whereas winter leagues in our area are meant to get the scores count towards competing clubs.
The extra cost of registered shoots cost go towards prizes, plaques or pins.
I don't want to impede on your decision, but the format we shoot in southern Ontario, works well for us.

Sorry to be late getting back to this. The league is being organized with the purpose of being able to shoot registered targets over the winter. The reason I asked about gauge is that some of the junior members(which are the ones that asked for the league) only shoot 20ga, few shoot 28 or .410 and most of the membership predominately shoot 12ga.

Thanks Brad. My understanding from talking to the more "experienced" members yesterday was that in the past they ran the league and registered the targets monthly.
