 Okay, sorry guys... Here goes, Now, I understand that .308 and 7.62 have slight differences, but is it possible to shoot 7.62 through a savage 10FP-LE?
Thanks fellahs!

I know one can shoot both and the other can only shoot one.
I can not remember what one is what though :O

But I want to know too.

ok to sum up the article, don't fire 308 Winchester in a 7.62 Nato Milsurp.

what about firing 7.62 milsurp in a rifle chambered for 308 Winchester?

This topic comes up every 3 weeks (seemingly) Its like 87 octane from esso and 87 octane from chevron...same stuff...I have fired many many rounds of 223 / 556 - 308 / 762 out of my assorted rifles ( bolt / semi ) and have had 0 probs

I think you have to be careful using milsurp in your non military rifles.
When I purchased my Rem700P in .223 and sold my AR I had 1000 IVI .223 rounds left. I was going to use them for practice but had several instances of a ++ stuck bolt, and deformed primers using the IVI. I stopped and got rid of the IVI at a loss. The headspace and hence the length of military are not always the same as SAAMI especially since there are many sources of mil surp around the world. Use caution, especially with new batches of ammo. Some will be great, others ??

I think experiences will vary....I have shot , portugese, south african, IVI , amongst others and have yet to find a problem....But then again the slightest difference in tolerances would / could be problematic

About a billion rounds of 7.62 NATO are fired out of .308 chambers. The NRA UK issues 7.62 form RG for most of their matches including the Imperial Meeting every year. Hundreds of shooters from around the world go there with .308 Win chambers and shoot 7.62 NATO. Before they went to 7.62 RG Match they issued 7.62 RG Ball ammo.
I have fired RG 7.62 ammo along with 7.62 IVI and 7.62 DA out of a target rifle with an Obermeyer match camber, NEVER had a problem.

I have seen two factory 308 rifles that had a difficult time chambering factory 308 ammo. Get a tight chambered rifle and max spec ammo and you have it.

I wonder if that might not be where some of the concerns about 7.62/308 or the 5.56/223 compatibility questions come from?

Milsurp 7.62=OK in .308. Don't do it the other way around (though if you have a rifle designated for 7.62, then you likely won't have much reason to shoot .308 out of it).

Rohann,
The published velocity for most 7.62 NATO ammo is 2800 fps. In most cases this is close +- 50 fps, but this is from a 20 inch barrel. If this same ammo is fired from a 30 inch barrel the velocity is around 2935 +- 50 fps. Match ammo loaded with 46 grains of Varget ( or 47.5 of IMR 4895)and 155's will get you around 2940-2950 fps out of the same rifle with a 30 inch barrel.
Until some one shows me their rifle that had a kaboom firing .308 out of a 7.62 NATO chamber I am not going to take that as gospel. Yes there are lots of stories about a friend's, cousin's, uncle's buddy that had a kaboom using. 308 in his 7.62 Mauser he brought back from WWII. But when you tell them the 7.62/.308 wasn't developed until the 50's the story might change.

If a kaboom has happened firing .308 out of 7.62 chambers I want to see your pictures, not something you found on the net. If it is a regular thing that happens when you fire .308 out of a 7.62 chamber, there should be lots of pictures out there and there should be a pile of CGN's up for Darwin Awards. Lastly if something like this has happened, there is a good chance it could be traced back to excessive headspace or the overall condition of the firearm.

If you refer to Bisley Palma shooting in GB the foreign shooters have to ensure that their .308 target rifles had a Bisley reamer pass in their chamber to avoid any chambering or pressure problem. (??)

Boom-Boom,
That is correct for all competitors. IIRC the rule was not only due to pressure problems, but the thought that a short chamber would crack the seal on the rounds when chambered, thus giving the shooter an accuracy advantage. It is also there to ensure shooters were not coming to the match with tight neck chambers and the ammo will fit. The NRA UK thinks RG ammo is the greatest ammo made, however when their teams travel abroad they don't shoot RG.
The Canadian teams have been experimenting with a longer throat chamber just for RG ammo. The Obermyer chamber I took to Bisley in 2000 passed, no problems as did other members of the Ontario team with the same chamber. Mine did however have about 1500 rounds thru it at the time.
