with the P having a 6" longer barrel i don't see how the LTR can have as good accuracy on the longer pokes, i know the velocity downrange will be higher with the 26" barrel but there has to be a difference out in the 500-800 yrd range between the 2.

having said that are people going with the LTR because its more compact and lighter? also i like the stock on the 700P but haven't had a chance to check out the LTR is it similar?

opinions?
sorry if A this has been asked before and B its a stupid question

Length does not always equal more accuracy but It helps to improve velocity. The longer the barrel, the more harmonics can affect trajectory. Stiffer shorter barrels have the ability to be extremely accurate with less tuning.

All things being equal, the shorter barrel, because it is stiffer, should have the greater accuracy potential. Barrel length may contribute to higher muzzle velocity, but not always. There are some cartridge designs that can acheive essentially complete powder utilization in less than 18" making longer barrels unnecessary. The .308 Win is a very efficient cartridge design.

I say size does matter

velocity = speed, so at greater distance one would wish for few more inches :D

Not for me. I know that my handloads chrony right in there at 2600fps. I know what the BC of my projectile is at different velocities, and I have the tools to calculate the drop at any distance.

I can dial clicks all day long, no sweat.

Jiffydawg don't go with either go with the New for 2007 Rem 700 XCR Tactical in .223,.308 or .300win mag,
All have Bell & Carlson stocks (green) Stainless streel fluted barrels, new trigger, trinyte PVD coated, alluminum bedding block, would make a great F/M class gun for F class shooting. My buddy order one in .223 & one in .308 from Epp's they are in customs now should get them this week.
What everyone said short and stiff mean good accuracy true, but the 26" barrel you can get considerable more fps on loads and for long shooting like F class
you will be better, the short barrels at 600 to 1000 will not match the speed you can drive bullets with the 26" barrel, thus the bullet is stuck out in wind to long. The Target Gun class with double peeps mostly shoot 29" to 32" and drive 155gr bullets 3000fps in .308
Take a look in Remingtons 2007 cataloge page 20
