A friend of mine owns a Nork SKS and had a weird problem at the range: when we were done firing the first 5 rounds, we put in 5 more, and when he retracted the bolt and let it slam shut, it fired on its own! His trigger finger was nowhere near the trigger or the guard at the time. What the hell could cause this? Is this standard with other norks as well?

There is cosmoline in the firing pin channel. Strip the rifle and soak the bolt in brake cleaner. This will get rid of the gunk in there. The firing pin should move freely in the bolt when shaken. Don't fire the rifle till the firing pin channel is clean. You could have an out of battery firing and lose part of a face (round fires when not totally chambered, base and side of case blow out and fly into skin and eyes).
As mentioned above clean the firing pin, and channel...it has to be dry, and able to rattle back and forth, also remember how it goes back in as if you put it back in upside down you will get a major slam fire.
Also stop letting the bolt slam closed..I guide mine halfway then let it go, you don't need the full spring tension to close the action.
And as always maintain safe muzzle direction.

+1 ...the firing pin must rattle freely when you shake the bolt. Everyone's already beat me to it, my diagnosis is slamfire as well. Dirty firing pin is the culprit, clean it up good and the problem will go away.
Alternately, I forget who had the link but there are spring-return firing pin kits available from Wolff. The kit comes with a new firing pin design and a small spring that prevents the firing pin from sticking forward and/or bouncing off primers when the bolt slams home. The kit is $60-something, but it would be worth it if your firing pin is worn. Just a thought, might be worth some research.

One other think you might want to think about, dry firing SKS's is a bad thing. The firing pins are sort of soft and can deform in the pin channel. If you dry fir too much the pin will get stuck forward.
I don't agree with not allowing the bolt to slam shut. If you follow the handle down you might create a jam. Remember these rifles were designed for general issue and soldiers do not baby thier rifles. Pull it back and let it go!
