Tired of fighting your wooden forend? The 519Firearms pistol-grip forend kit for the Mossberg 500 gives you better ergonomics, crisper control, and a more modern feel — and yes, it’s straightforward to install if you follow the right steps. (View this item on TNA)
What you’re swapping
The 519 kit replaces the OEM wooden forend with a finished 3D-printed pistol-grip style forend and includes the special castle nut tool to remove and reinstall the old unit without hacking or forcing things.
Step-by-step (simple & safe)
Why the 519Firearms option?
Quick tips from Stanley
When threading the castle nut back on, start the thread backward a turn or two and feel for the “drop” — it saves you from cross-threading.
Don’t crank the nut crazy tight — snug is enough. If the whole action starts to move, you’ve gone too far.
If you’re unsure about the internal parts or spring tension, take pictures as you disassemble so you’ll remember reassembly order.

The 519 kit replaces the OEM wooden forend with a finished 3D-printed pistol-grip style forend and includes the special castle nut tool to remove and reinstall the old unit without hacking or forcing things.
Step-by-step (simple & safe)
- Clear the firearm.
- Open the action. Pull the action open so the bolt and follower are visible; remove the magazine tube cap if needed.
- Remove the barrel if desired. The kit demo shows removing the barrel to create comfy working space — not strictly necessary, but it helps.
- Unscrew the castle nut. Fit the supplied tool into the castle nut, turn counterclockwise (lefty-loosey), and back the nut off slowly. Keep forward pressure on the forend while you unthread to avoid surprises.
- Slide the wood off. Once the nut is loose, the wooden forend slides off the action rails. Keep parts organized.
- Install the 519 forend. Slide the new 519 unit onto the action rails so the locking tabs seat correctly, then engage the castle nut threads by hand (feel for the drop/click to avoid cross-threading).
- Tighten & check. Use the tool to snug the castle nut—finger tight plus a touch of torque so there’s no wiggle but you’re not overdoing it. Cycle the action to confirm smooth function and correct engagement.
- Reinstall barrel & function check. If you removed the barrel, reinstall and run a full function check with dummy rounds or snap caps before live fire.
Why the 519Firearms option?
- Better grip profile for faster, more consistent pumps.
- Sturdy 3D-printed construction with a finished feel.
- Includes the right tool — so you don’t have to MacGyver something from the parts bin.
- Easy reversible swap: put the wood back whenever you want.
