hi im interested in buying a remmington 870 police mag but i was concerned about the barrel lengths i have a hunting shotgun but would like to be able to use the 870 also is 18 inches to short? (the 20 have irons and i want a bead sight) ill mostly be hunting duck but ill be hunting other birds also.

A bit like using a hatchet as a hammer, but yes it will kill birds. You'll be confined to short shots as these guns typically don't come threaded for chokes and are usually cylinder or improved cylinder choked. Will also need a long magazine plug to limit it to the usual 2 shell mag capacity, just use a long piece of dowel cut to length. This all said, there are better tools for the job though, and they're cheap.

And your hunting partners may want you to step forward of them when you cut loose swinging and firing a barrel that short in close proximity such as a duck blind. The muzzle blast would deafen anyone in the blind and I know I would not appreciate my hunting partners gun being so short as to barely make it past my melon!!

If the gun is to used mostly to hunt with, it wouldn't be the smartest idea to handicap yourself with a fixed cylinder or improved cylinder? If you are buying the gun to hunt, forget the tactical crap, and get a real hunting gun.

the gun would mostly be for fun/ range use as i said i already have an actual hunting shotgun with a 28 inch barrel i was just wonder if it would be at all practical to use such a short barrel i was mostly worried about range but some other good points were raised

I have hunted with my 870 P 18.5 inch barrel (its my avatar pic) (mag plugged with wood doweling).

A few things, first its VERY heavy, Im 6 feet tall and in very good shape and it wore me down way more than a proper hunting gun would, in short took some of the fun out of hunting.

Second HUGE thing was, its very loud with the short barrel. Shooting slugs at a deer had my right ear sore for about 2 weeks. I would not hunt with it again. Its also not that great for skeet etc because of its weight and lack of choke.

My opinion, its a fun range gun only.
