Shopping around for a .223 bolt gun for fun and coyote hunting. What say you guys about these two rifle in a side by side comparison ? I have never had a CZ but I do like my 700's. Is the CZ a better gun ?

Heavy barrelled Remington 700s in 223 Rem have always been very accurate in my experience. I've never owned a CZ in 223.

The CZ is an order of magnitude higher quality rifle. If you’ve ever built anything, you can appreciate the quality and manufacturing differences immediately in a side by side comparison. The CZ is all forged and machined, with intricate cuts, broaching, and overall innumerably more intricate manufacturing operations to offer a slick detachable mag controlled round feed micro action scaled to the round. The CZ also has a spectacular single set trigger, and integral scope based machined into the action, the most solid system there is.

The M700 is an agglomeration of manufacturing shortcuts and cost saving measures (soldered on bolt handle, oversized action made to work with the .223, “pipe” receiver and separate recoil lug, tiny extractor) that generally shoots well. The CZ is the far higher quality rifle however that doesn’t mean it will necessarily punch smaller groups. It will be a sweeter handling, and nicer to use rifle with the set trigger and detachable mags, and micro action. The safety is also far better than Remington’s. There are still legions if M700 fans here so be prepared for wildly contrasted opinions from mine.

For my personal experience...

I already owned a Cz 527 Varmint in .204 ruger.
It was a very nice rifle. I do like everything made by CZ, I don't think you can't go wrong with any of their products.

The Rem 700 is a bigger rifle.

The 527 is a *micro* type action so its more compact.
The barrel on the 527 is also a medium/heavy barrel.
Its a very nimble varmint rifle.
The single set trigger is a nice feature.

I don't think there is a bad choice between the two but if it was me, I would choose the CZ :p

A bunch of helpful posts.... thanks for all that.

I have 2 CZ 455 trainer shooters and I just love their machining, their feel, their old school approach. Currently there exist quite a few aftermarket parts/ accessories makers and that’s a great plus for the CZ platforms.

I happen to have 4 Remmy 700’s and yes, they are the epitome of shortcut manufacturing processes... well put. They happen to shoot well when they are put together with care/consideration/love/craftsmanship etc. I buy them because I need a couple of client shooter rifles in both .308 and .223 for my business. They are also somewhat easier to maintain (try maintaining a fleet of M14 rifles) and clean.

Interestingly enough, I’ve been super lucky to encounter great shooting take off barrels found for around $100 right here on the EE forums. So for my stable of M700 Remmys, I’ve set up different receivers with various barrels for changing needs. IE: Coyote season into deer rifle season and back again.

Currently my .308 client shooter wears a .308 Varmint or VS barrel that happened to screw on and head space (with my Forster gauges) perfectly on the first attempt/go/effort. Oh yeah, I bought that .308 VS barrel here on the EE forum. Then I bought another 700 Remmy barrel taken off a Magpul Edition .260. I screwed it on to a 700 SS receiver that hosted the .308 barrel and YES.... the Forster gauges said I’m all Good to GO! Now that receiver is set up for a .308/.260 switch barrel agreement. I can shoot that rig in Base Borden (.260) and Garrison Petawawa (.308). How cool is that?

I don’t mind doing all this fun with the Remmy 700 rigs because once they are set up (by a gunsmith) for you, then you can meet a couple of needs with ONE rifle/stock/scope optics and a couple of barrels.

I could never envision doing all this with a darling CZ527.... they are so beautiful. Just like my CZ455 rigs.

I have another Remmy SA RH SS receiver (sold the 7mm-08 factory barrel) and currently it’s shares two barrels set up similarly for deer (.260) and coyotes (.22-250). Both barrels were sourced/bought right here on CGNutz EE Forums. Again, one great Remmy stock, one receiver, one Leupold 3-9X Patrol scope, and the 2 barrel setup. If life was ideal I would just leave the .260 barrel on and use that rig for deer and coyotes. I still love the .22-250 round and my 50 grain VMax booolits. :)

Anyways, select between that CZ527 and 700 VLS with great care. Each have their merits!

Cheers, Barney

Here is my CZ527 Varmint Laminate. Very accurate rifle!
