If I understand the IPSC rules, I am allowed to replace parts on a stock gun with parts of another model of the same make and stay in "Classic" division. I want to replace the mag release button and install the R1 'Enhanced' ambi-safety on my stock R1.

Who do I get these parts from? Gravel Agency in Quebec is the importer/distributor. Anybody got a contact for them?

That is for production division, for
Classic you can use parts from whatever supplier
you choose as long as it still fits in the box.
If that helps in parts sourcing.

Amateur Classic shooter here - If I'm not mistaken, you've got a lot of leeway in terms of parts swapping within Classic division. You can use any safety configuration from any manufacturer for your 1911. You can generally use any parts configuration, which is one of the reasons I like the division. The only restrictions are the size of the extended magwell if you add one, and the overall size of the rig must fit in "the box".

8-rd magazines are also a requirement if you want to be scored in major.

So you can use whatever parts you'd like, from wherever. I usually have trouble finding what I want from Canadian retailers, so I tend to order from US web-based retailers.

Alpining - we're ALL "amateur" Classic shooters, unless we're LEO's or otherwise licenced to kill. It's just a game, even if we regard it as a martial art form.

So, I can use ANY aftermarket ambi and mag release button in "Classic" ? Any limitations on size of the mag button? I don't want a humongous button, just a little more surface area.
I'll be using a pair of R1's which have all the bells, gongs & whistles I need or want. Could have had more on the R1 'Enhanced', but I don't care for it's look.

I contacted them re: parts for the 1911 R1 series; specifically the ambi-safety and extended mag release. They have no parts in stock at the mo', but tell me they expect delivery in the near future. I've asked to notified, and when I hear from them, I'll post it.

Thanks, Saskcop! I've ordered several things from Brownells over the years. I can get them faster than from any Canadian source. Same for Buffalo Arms.

I just though I'd keep my R1's 100% Remington, but it's no big deal. Out of curiosity, what did you get for your R1? What's your impression of the pistol so far?

I love the pistol thus far, it is much tighter than I predicted. It is also quite the tack driver with all the loads I have tried. I have a beaver tail grip safety coming as it has been just chewing up my hand. Of course I have to swap the hammer too.

My first R1 was 'tight', the 2nd one (still unfired) even tighter. I like the way the barrel pops up into lock up. It has a better trigger pull as well, although the original gun's pull is improving with use. Surprising for a Series '80-type linkage.

I have a small paw, so I don't get hammer bit with the stock tang, even with major loads. How do you like the short trigger? That is one mod I may do, but in the meantime, if it ain't broke ....

Yeah, the R1 Carry is going to give some of the high end 1911's a run for the money.

Only negatory I've read ("The Complete Book of the Model 1911" - The Cooper Edition) 'bout the Enhanced was from a guy that used it for a 500 rd course at Gunsite, running it for three days without cleaning or lubing. He was getting gouged by the rear of the safety lever and felt it needed to be rounded and smoothed where it meets the frame when disengaged.

On one of the 1911 forums, there was a discussion about the need for an ambi at all in the real world, not in a competition. Some reported the ambi coming off safe inadvertently. Same for the forward slide serrations. Seems to be a love 'em or hate 'em proposition. One LEO said that in his experience, no one ever used the front serrations in a tactical situation.

I never liked ambi safeties, and don't need em for IDPA. For real world, if you are carrying cocked and locked that ambi may get caught and unlocked with out you knowing depending on holster and strength of friction.

I dunno about the gougy safety, but mine feels fine in my small hands. I will admit the slide serations are sharp enuff to cut you though, the Carry looks so sweet without front serations

I just read the 'Guns & Ammo' review of the R1 Carry and I think I'd like one. Don't 'need', so much as 'want'.

I don't find the full-size 1911 a 'big gun' in any way, and I like the way it tames recoil. But - a steel framed Commander-size R1 with all the bells, gongs and whistles looks pretty cool. My unfired NIB R1 may well be upgraded when the R1 Carry is available.

My experience with .45 Commanders is limited to a couple of mags with a friend's Combat Commander years ago. He had a pair, tuned by King's Custom Gun Works. It seemed 'right' and he used it well, shooting fast and accurately, but he shot a load that didn't make IPSC Major when the standard was Winchester 230 hardball out of a Commander length barrel. He was found out when his loads were tested at a match - embarrassing!

If an R1 Carry can hold 6" at 25 yds, I'd be happy. I enjoy watching Hitchcock 45 hit seemingly impossible targets with small pistols in his video reviews.
