im wondering if anyone has made a spread sheet or knows where i can find a chart that would list the approximate drop of a 30-06 round coming from an r700. ?

didnt know those were out there. ill do some looking around for one. thanks guys. ill see what i dig up.
just out of curiosity, im not planning on curently shooting past 300 yards. i think 300 is as far as my local range goes out to. im gonna visit crappy tire for ammo. what would you recommend for me to start off with as basic plinking ammo to get used to the rifle and the scope?

if you have an iphone or ipod touch, Itunes offers two bullet drop ballistic calculators for free. I have down loaded them, but not had the chance to try them out yet, so I can't say if they are any good, but the price is right and you can take them to the range or the field.

Jesus wept. It's 300 yards and a 30-06. Put targets up at 100, 200, 300 and shoot the bloody thing. You don't need a range estimating computer for something that close. Just shoot it, and write down (you know, like they did in the old days with a pen and paper) the results. Try it again with a different batch of ammo. Repeat. Pretty soon you know what YOUR gun will do with YOU shooting YOUR ammo at YOUR range. Man, it's not the toys, it's the shooter. Practice, and more practice. - dan

whats this pen thing you speak of? is that from the era of vcr's and tube tv's? ;)

lol. honestly i was just a bit more interested in knowing how much say a 185 gr bullet would drop over what distance. just a rough idea with a stock gun, but now i guess i have to go out and shoot the bloody thing :D

oh and i looked up the calculator mentioned, gonna need to do some more reading and learning. there are options in there, most of them, that completely confuse me, lol

This is pretty standard stuff. Zero the rifle for 200 yards, and in most cases you'll be 2" high at 100 and 8" low at 300. Your results will not be an exact match; the trajectory you observe is dependent on a number of factors: the specific bullet and load you shoot, the height of your sight above the center of the bore, and the weather conditions when you shoot are those having the greatest effect. Beyond that, follow Dan's advice.

Amen to that brother. Speaking of that, I am off to the range. :D

You do need to know your velocities. If you are using factory ammo, the box usually has that printed somewhere for you.

If you are using handloads then you will have to beg, borrow or steal a chronograph before you can use any type of bullet drop chart or software.

Holy crap 8" drop from 200-300 yards is huge.
Good to know about the info on the box ill have to do some more research and go from there. Thanks for all the help guys

Ok, so I was a little pissy. I'm doing the fly around the planet thing again and I've been up for over a day, with more hours to go before I sleep. Sorry. But as mentioned, ballistic charts and calculators do nothing unless you know the velocity of the loads you are shooting. The data printed on the box is a very loose "average". Seriously, you're way better off just charting it yourself. - dan

I think that the OP just wants a little better understanding of ballistics.

Sometimes you just can't win here. We should be helping someone out who wants to learn, weren't we all at this stage at sometime in our hobby?

I do understand that some folks were born error free and filled with all the knowledge they will ever need, some of us weren't so lucky.

thanks, i know i was born with very little error and this is where it is :D perhaps someone has a link they can send my way where i can start reading and absorbing a little info :)

dan dont worry about it, ive put in alot of hours in the last two weeks with no time off so i know how easily i can get activated and edgy aswell

Go to Mystic Precision, banner on top of page.

On his site he has some very good write ups for long range shooting which may touch on the areas you want.

He has some ballistics info on there.

I have the Sierra Infinity program which allows you to play with every variable and give you a mathematical view of different effects on bullet flight.

If you can download it from somewhere it would be a great tool to play with.
