Rabbit hunting

What would be your guys recommendations for shotgun caliber for rabbit hunting.

Also thinking of a .22lr but I assume a shotgun will be earlier for a new hunter

Cheers

I've only ever done 22 for rabbits. Up to 50-60 yards pretty easy for most 22 rifles with simple scopes.
They usually stop and freeze, give you plenty of time to aim.
Not like birds where you try to spray a moving target and hope one of the pellets hits them.
Otherwise I believe #6 or #7.5 lead shot if you choose to stick with the shotgun.

Most of my rabbit hunting in SSW Ontario has them running along treelines and fence rows so a shotgun is the way to go. Started carrying 12g shotgun, but as I get older I realize there is a lot more walking than shooting so switched to a 20g and now most of the time I carry a 410.

I figure I'm taking the dog for a long walk carrying a firearm so I might as well make it easier on me.

YMMV

Welcome, Douglas. A Shotgun will fill the bill and if you're new, a nice 20-gqauge with a proper shell will do the job and you no doubt will find other uses for that 20. Listen to the other members on this and other forums from the site and you will be expert in no time.

Either. Will work but the shotgun is safer than the rifle if your hunting in areas with other people around. Rabbits are soft and fairly easily dispatched and any simple field load will work. Running targets with a rifle will be frustrating for a beginner. Welcome to Nutz. Beer braised rabbit stew mmnnn

Rabbit and tree rabbit... aka squirrel. Both very similar, look similar, taste similar
Not much meat. So dont go with anything too powerful, you'll obliterate it

I use 17HMR with 17gr varmint ammo.

Forest Service Road hunting just before and at dusk.

Flat trajectory (within an inch) from 25-150 yards. The back side of the snowshoe hare's head usually disappears.
