Raccoon hunting

Not to be too much of a smart ass... but getting shot hurts. All animals can and will make noise in certain situations. I have heard pain/distress noises from mice to moose. The usual advice is certain to follow.... make the first one count and those horrible sounds will be minimized.

I understand what you're saying, it was just a really disturbing wailing sound so I wanted to know if it was sort of common for the coons to scream like that.

A terrified, distressed animal suffering pain screamed.
Your friend needs to become competent, if he is going to kill things humanely.
I cannot conceive of why you started this thread.

My friend hit a shot right in the vitals, it lasted 15 seconds. I did not mean to promote killing things/suffering. I think it is a valid question.

Nothing wrong with the question and you got your answer in the first post.... the second post by super moderator Tiriaq is simply condescending.

Hmmm. Being a farm boy I’ve probably shot hundreds of coons in my lifetime and never had this happen. Usually using 22lr, but sometimes a shotgun. Not saying I don’t believe you, I’ve just never personally had it happen when I’ve shot them. I have heard them screaming the way you describe if they get in a fight with a dog however.

Hmm Im in GTA and you can't touch these nasty invasive pests....
The screaming of a coon writhing in pain, is nothing compared to the screaming from 320 lbs liberal (party supporter) women with more tatts than brain cells.
Ya, you wound a mammal, its gonna shriek in pain.

I think your friend needs to improve marksmanship capability... if you cant make a humane kill, then you should not take the shot.

Is the Coon' hat still a thing? I don't think I'd be eattin' it...well, unless, it was like the Apocalypse ;) & ya, as already mentioned. Getting shot & dying from it, well, hurts. Hence the out cry of pain etc. Don't Hunt/kill animals if it bothers you. That's why Grocery Stores exist.

Pretty sure he used 22 magnum[/QUOTE

Edit: I was hunting with two other buddies in Moose Jaw.
We were small game/upland hunting the other guys had shotguns myself with the only 22 long rifle.
One of them discovered a large racoon asleep and he desired the pelt but he had only 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge shells so he asked me to dispatch it for him.

The first two Winchester Super X hollow points from a distance of three feet were a tad bit offline and only wounded it. I stood directly over it and a carefully centered Stinger finally broke its neck. This the third shot mere inches from its neck. Demised forthwith. He weighed 33 pounds.

Racoons can be tenacious.

I had one climb my ladder stand while archery hunting deer. I kicked him down 3 times and ended up smacking him with my arrow and braodhead. Finally got fed up and knocked him to the ground and arrowed him. He couldnt stand tall enough to get off the arrow shaft. He screamed insanely loud. Growls hisses crys screams. He wouldnt stop spinning around the shaft for a decent second shot and it took me a while to recock my cross bow in the stand.
I agree bears make erie sounds when wounded. Ive heard it once. Shot a bear that was following me in low light during a thunder storm. 20 mins before end of legal light but in pines under heavy clouds and rain with a wet scope i made a bad shot at about 10 yards. What i thought was a leg turned out to be a 6" pine tree. Not sure where i hit the bear but sizable chunks of fat and flesh were found over a 100 yards from where i shot it. It ran far screaming like a hyena. It happens. Even mice in a moose trap can scream as well as rabbits when hit with shot
