I realize I went for a cheap shotgun when I bought the H&R Pardner pump, but I was wondering if this is normal as this is my first shotgun. Watched some videos online and wanted to try the pullpump (I think that's what its called).

You pull slightly on the fore-end and then pull the trigger. Once the shot fires, you rack the slide to reload immediately.

The thing is, when I pull on the fore-end, it's like the pulling has locked something in place. Once I fire, I need to release a bit the tension and then rack the slide.

Is that normal?

When you pull on the pump, it puts pressure on the locking mechanism that keeps the bolt closed while you're firing. (Having the bolt NOT lock while firing would not be a good thing) So, once you pull the trigger and the shot goes off, you probably need to relax the pressure on the locking mechanism so that it can move out of the way, for you to pump it.

Different guns have different action quirks, the pullrack technique is for rapid fire in competitions and such and isn't normally used in a sporting gun. Some of the really old models would fire if you held the trigger down and racked the slide ( model 97s for example).

Yup, shot a Winchester Model-12 Trap gun that was slicked up unbeknownst to me till the quickfire experience.
