I've had a raccoon eating my trash in my suburb for a few weeks. Now he is stuck in the compost bin. I called DNR and they told me to just let him go. I don't think this "solution" will help anything in the long run. What would you guys do?

One lone raccoon who had not caused me any trouble and did not look sic, I would likely let him go (I live in a rural setting). However if he had been a nuisance or was any threat to my pets or family I would put him down one way or another.

Urban Rocky does that. He clearly does live on your property. Had an uncle who lived in Hamilton, Ont., who had a family of 'em living under his garage for eons. They'd knock over every garbage can in the ally behind the houses, except my uncle's.
You need to release Rocky and put something very heavy or a lock on the garbage cans/bin. Remove the food source and Rocky will go elsewhere.
Never heard of any Provincial DNR that would deal with nuisance small animals. That has created an industry that removes 'em for a fee.

I hate to say it But there just like mice and rats if not permanently remove they will multiply and you will be creating a bigger problem for yourself

You've already got him trapped, that's 90% of the job. Just put a ratchet strap around the bin so he can'y get out and take him for a drive, preferably to a conservation area or other wilderness type place and let him go there.

How do you deal with a smart raccoon? He went in my live trap once, somehow escaped and won't go in anymore. I put my spypoint bf-8 trail cam out in my chicken coop area to watch what he does. I use sardines and dead chickens scrap bones and still he just circles the trap. He pulled one of a young chickens and guinea hens through the cage they were in. If I can't find a way soon the anti freeze is going to have to come out of the garage lol.

Put something heavy on the lid, get your garden hose and fill the compost bin with water. Dispose of contents.

I called an exterminator and he said he would just tip the bin over and charge me $75 for it...yeah thanks for nothing. He told me he shouldn't come back because he got trapped and he will remember that in the future (Is that how it works??) Anyway, it was hot outside and I decided to go against my better judgement and release him. Not sure if he was very sleepy or dying and he didn't move when I opened the bin for him to go away. I had to kick him out lol

.22 subsonic was my first tough but I don't think my neighbors would appreciate. If he does come back I'll strap the bin tight and drive to the wood.
