Radios for coyote hunting (not CB's or FRS)

Baofeng radios are the bomb... I have BF-888s and UV-5R+ in my stable. I used the uv5R's at work in the harshest of harsh conditions and beat the snot out of them and they are reliable as all get out... even bought the little magnetic antennas for a few and the cigarette lighter plug battery replacement to run them hard wired in few vehicles and the distance gain was immense.

They can both be heavily modified programming wise using "chirp" fun to tinker with

just installed BF-888's on my Versys and some of my friends bikes with a bluetooth PTT system that also bluetooths a swine sniffer and cell phone. Working great with my SMH5 in my helmet. Me and my buddies can talk for miles now not just 50m bluetooth distance. An absolute must have for folks who bike with friends. I used CHIRP to turn on scrambler and coded tone squelch so we are garbled to anyone but ourselves. Yup...... I'm a high-tech redneck....

I got my Ham license too, after buying 2 baofengs.

I had big hopes for the baofengs, but after learning all the course material, I doubt the performance will be insane in rolling hills with tree covers (still have to confirm). It needs line of sight, no matter how many watts you're using to broadcast with. Hopefully, will be able to hit the repeater close to where we hunt. It's about 12km away. I routinely hit the local repeaters (15 and 12km away) with ease! But they are located on top of the highest mountains close by.

I remember seeing that with 0.5W, you could talk to something 250km away...straight up (the ISS). Just keep that in mine when you think LOS isn't that important ;-)

Great to be able to get all kinds of accessories for the baofengs though! Got the AA battery pack...great stuff.
