Well I went out trapshooting in the bush with some freinds and family today and I brought my 597VTR and SR-22 out with me just to dump some ammo through them just to see how they would function .
I bought the VTR mid december and the SR22 around christmas and both hav sat in the safe since . I finaly had some time last week to strip them down and clean them .

The VTR little bit of a Pain in the ass to take apart but not to bad ,I cleaned it and loosend the guide rails a bit and thats it .
The SR22 again a little bit of a pain in the ass to get apart but not that bad ,But when I had it apart I put a VQ hammer and a Bolt buffer .

So I Brought out a 30 round Eagle mag and a 10 for the VTR and a BC 25 round Hotlips(not steel lips) and the 10 round factroy mag for the SR22 and for ammo brought out a fedral 550 Bounus pack (hollowpoint) ,fedral Hyper Velocity, Win Xpert (lead HP) and some win Wild cats .

I have no sights on these 2 guns ,but I just wanted to test for function and more so for the VTR as I hear so Many people #####ing about theres (and I own 2 other 597s as well) and I had No doubt in the ruger .
So for the VTR I ran two 30 round mags of each type of ammo and one 10 round mag of each type for a total of 280 rounds, I shot rapid fire ,slow fire .

The ruger Same thing, two 25 round mags per brand of ammo and one 10 round mag per brand of ammo for a total of 240 rounds.

The conclusion???????

The VTR was Flawless not one jam, stovepipe, failure to feed, failure to eject,.......... Nothing ,It was flawless

The SR22 and like I said I had No doubt in it (I have had so Many 1022s I dont second guess them) I had one stovepipe out of 240 rounds and that is it .
Like I said , I just wanted to test for function so I just shoot into a bank to see the reliability and I do not have any sights on them . Mabey I will throw some scopes on this week so I can test for accuracy on the weekend .

With that said if you own a VTR and you are having problems,LOOSEN THE GUIDE RAILS I did it right off the bat Because I know it works

Hope this helps

Nice thorough report. Thanks for the information and tips. I am looking at both of those rimfires this year for my son and I to share.

Which do you prefer ergonomically?? I like the side mag release of the VTR but have not handled the SR yet.

I will always go with a ruger as i have been around so many of them over the years , But I have had good luck with the 597 in the 22mag, so I bought the same model in 22lr and then I saw the VTR and liked it too, So I bought both.

as for resale I would say the SR22 will take it over the VTR if you ever decide to sell them ,just because people seem to have more problems with the 597 and some people would not buy it because of that.

Guys piss and moan about the 597 and state that " It should work right out of the box no questions about it " and that would be nice if it worked that way but most firearms I have owned all needed to be tweaked in one form or anouther ,even if it is just turning an action screw ,and it also helps you learn your firearm in and out as well .
Read real reveiws and research problems as there is often just an easy fix for any said problem, form your own opinion of a firearm from facts not from hearsay "bob knew a guy who had a brother ,whose cousen's uncle had a gun and he said it was crap, So dont buy one of them"

Thanks, actaully most of 2009 was spent trading guns around and getting ones that were not supposed to work well at all. I cleaned them, googled the problems, did some adjustments and repairs, and they all ended up working like a clock. TO expect a semi to be prefect out of the box is a bit much, but the tinkerin on a ruger is cheap.
