Hey everyone! As promised, heres a brief range report using my new Mossberg shotgun. First of all, i gotta start out and say "Wow, what a day!" Since my first turkey hunt is tomorrow, i went out today and got all the required camo, etc. Now, did i ever spend a lot of money, of course i should have known better though. Happens every time i buy a new gun and try something new (like hunting in general) hehe So anyways, after blowing my budget on clothes, calls, cleaning supplies, etc. I finally made it down to the range with a box of Remington shells. 3" #5's. All i could find between 3 stores, so it had to do. I was a little short on time so i just grabbed 1 box.... (I know i know, to find ammo that works the best with your gun, you need to try a few different kinds) But as stated earlier, i've already over blown my budget so i gotta try and save somewhere. :)

So here are 3 pics, just using my 22" turkey barrel. The 1st pic is at 20 yards, the next one at 25 (which the shot went high) and then the last at 25 yards as well. I only fired 7 shots in total (had to save 3 for tomorrow morning), so i didn't get quite as much play time as i wanted. (should have bought more ammo!)

Don't know if i did real good or not, (please feel free to let me know) but considering this is my first time shooting a shotgun, i was pretty happy. Quite the recoil too, but it was well worth it.

I also took a couple of pics of the 100 yard range where i shoot at.

That patterning doesn't look very tight. I have targets at home that I should take pics of and post. I 've got way more pellets in the kill zone at 20 and 30yards. You might want to look at trying some different shells.

Thats what i was wondering about. In my opinion, i thought the pattern would have been just a little tighter at 25 yards so thats why i wanted some feedback.
I definitely need to try a different shells (can't stand Remington ammo to begin with) and hopefully that concentrates the pattern better. Now would it help if i used 3 1/2" shells? Or should i just stick with the 3" and try different ammo?

I have the mossberg 500 turkey gun and it came with the 670 turkey choke, I found the Winchester supreme HV turkey loads no4, worked really well good out to 35 yds. I shot a turkey last Saturday with it at 20 yds and it didn't stand a chance. Send me some pics of your gun, I was thinking about upgrading to the 535 next year. Thanks.

At 25 yards you should have a lot more pellets in the circle area of the target and in the kill zone. I'll take some pics of my targets with the Federal #6 3" to show you the difference. Like Grouse Man said, lighter might be better. The stuff I'm using is only 1 3/4 oz shot vs. the usual 2 oz.

I'll take some pics and include the particulars on the shells when I get home tonight.

I think the main difference between the 500 and the 535 is just that the 535 is chambered for 3 1/2 in shells. Might not be worth the upgrade just for that reason.

Dave.... that would be great if you could share some pics with me so i kinda know what i should be expecting with better ammo. I'll definitely be going back out to the range this weekend to see if i can clear this little problem up.

If you realy want to bag a turkey

you should use some black cloud

I know you might think it only rocks out on duck but turkeys don't stand a chance!

Thats my 2 cents.

I don't think either bird stood much of a chance. :D

Shells are Federal Premium Mag-Shok 3" 1 3/4 oz shot #6 with "Flightcontrol Wad" Not cheap at $18.95 per box but with only using 2 to pattern the gun and hopefully only 2 for 2 birds it's not overly costly.

Wow (what a difference from mine)!!! Thanks for providing the pics Dave! Really gives me something to compare to and reason to definitely get better ammo. That pattern looks pretty darn tight at 20 yards, and that 30 yard shot is nothing to complain about either... :)

To bad its steel shot.... (theres a warning imprinted on my barrel saying "use Lead only"

I think steel shot would wreck it.

Yeah 20 yards almost blew a big hole right through under his chin. The target says you need at least 5 pellets in the kill zone on the 30 yard shot I think I quickly counted 35! :)

Even the Kent shells that we shot out of my neighbours gun did a pretty good job at 30 yards.
