Hi all

I bought this on a whim last week. I had no plan to buy a 17 HMR, buy why let reason get in the way of buying a gun. I finally got a couple of hours to get to the range today - because the sky was blue and there was no wind to speak of. I had a Nikon buckmaster 6-18 that was not on a gun, so I mounted that and off I went.

I was shocked that after sighting in at 50 yards (about 10 rounds) that this rifle was popping out the middle of the target quite consistently. When I raised the rifle to the 100 yard line the groups opened up quite a bit. I attributed this to the barrel being new and me getting used to the gun. I started shooting Federal 17gr. hp, which was good at 50, and opened up to about 3 inches at 100. The rangemaster was helping me out, and happened to have a few boxes of the Hornady Varmint 17 gr. so I gave that a try. Off the bat, the holes were popping on the threads of the scope. Little to no recoil from this round makes for really sharp consistency.

I found a few spots at the very back of the range where there were pockets if sand that looked to be around 1 - 2 inches across. This would be about 220-230 yards from my spot. Incredible, the rifle was consistently landing a round into these spots without a lot of drop. Shocking.

I was planning to buy a larger centerfire rifle for some target/varmint work, but this may do for at least half that battle. This is a hoot to shoot at distances that make me smile.

The target below is the best of a string 7 shots. There were flyers for sure, but when I concentrated and did my bit, these were the results. The target was at the 100 yard line.

Nice shooting!

Just to let you know though that at 220 yards the .17HMR has dropped about 12 inches or so (for future hold-over).

I read that too, but it sure seemed to be short through the scope. It seemed easy enough to judge where it would land - but unknown how that would print on paper.

Nice setup, no scope adjustment from 50 to 100 eh:D

Funny enough I switched to the Hornady at the 100 line, which made for some small adjustments to compensate. When I re-shot at 50, it hits about an inch low from POI.

I have the same gun and when sighted in for 100 yards and then I move back to the 200 yard bench , I record the same results time after time, a nine inch drop.

I have the older synthetic stock version. Laser like and accurate. Mine prefers remington ammo Hornady next federal the worst. With a 100yd zero mine drops 6" at 200 or 1 mildot. I love it to death.

What ammo?

Hornady17 grain v-max bullet @ 2550 fps......red label on box called varmint express
I am off to the range in a few minutes, will verify the accuracy of my gun and my information.
Then after lunch off to the gopher patch, it's not like they didn't ask for it, the little buggers.

I wish I had paid more attention to this thread when I read it the first time. I bought a Savage 93R17BV on the weekend, but picked up 200 rounds of the Federal V-Shok ammo. 3" groups @ 100 yards with no wind. I seriously hope the Hornady ammo runs better or I'm going to be pissed. I could shoot $2/box .22LR out of a semi-auto if all I wanted was a less than 50 yard gopher gun.

CanFire; try CCI in either V-MAX or TNT. Both produce 5 holes touching at 100 yds. Also remember its a new gun, I had to fire about 500-600 rounds before I found the right bullets and till the barrel got broken in. It'll get better!

Had to get one. Savage M93R17GV, which is the budget hardwood vers. with Accu-trigger. $299 at SIR.

Slapped a not in use 3x9 scope on and took her for a run. I shot a few 5 rd groups at 100 yards with both Federal Plastic tip and the Hornady Hollow point. Best group was about .75" with the Federal and .90 with the Hornady, which printed about two inches higher. Non of the groups were over ~ 1.25". A couple were three in one ragged hole with a couple of group wreckers.

Out at 200 yard, the groups opened up to 3-4". Usual vertical stringing.

Ferral bunnies look out!

Now to clean this skinny little pipe. Anyone know who makes a good rod guide to fit a savage.

Hornady (.17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire, commonly known as the .17 HMR) is the most accurate I have tried to date. The federal had the same results that you had. I would like to try the CCI versions of their ammo too, but have not found a retailer who sells it yet.

You can call BS all you want, but I took this rifle to the summerland shoot with MysticPlayer last weekend. I had hunt5tuff watch me hit a rock that I ranged at 275 3 times in a row with the Savage. The rock was about the size of a 2 L milk jug :dancingbanana: The holdover was decent. It was hard to see where you were shooting at other targets as the little bullet buries right in on impact. I'm liking this gun a lot.

it could be you i know someone up stairs would have to be in a really good mood for me to get those groupings

ps where would an aprppreate area to ask about excerises to improve accuracy on a side note be?

The Stoney Point guide rod for Savage .17 - .22 rimfires isn't great, but it's workable if you don't follow the packages instructions. I don't think any bore guide will work good because the standing ejector is in the way. I'll take some pictures this evening and explain what I mean when I say not to follow the packages instructions.

EDIT: I started a new thread discussing the Stoney Point bore guide here: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=151751
