As reported earlier, I increased the clamping pressure on the stock/receiver by adding in some cardboard. I shot the rifle today to see if the grouping improved. It did not.
I also replaced the front sight with an aperture. This was to improve my sight picture so I could get more reliable information. My old eyes don't work very well with a blade.
This worked very well. I am sure I was shooting better shots off the bench.
At 100 yards, with the rear sight bottomed, the rifle shoots to point of aim at 100. This group, with military FMJ bullets, is about 2.7"
The middle of the front sight is 0.575" above the bottom of the sight base. This might give you an idea of how much you can shorten a tall blade, so the rear sight is no so high. For me this improve the cheek weld.
I hope to try this rifle in CQB. For this purpose I have collected some real crappy bullets that group about a foot at 100 yards out of a good rifle and down loaded them for CQB (25 to 10 yards). The 150 grain bullets are loaded over 25gr of BLC2. I am guessing velocity is around 1,800 fps. have not yet checked that. recoil is very mild. Less than a SKS.
I tested them at 25 yards. The middle group is full power ammo. The down loaded ammo did well. The correct elevation with these is 5 clicks up from the 100 yard setting with full power ammo.
The small ring of this aperture is fine for target shooting, but much too small for off-hand shooting in CQB. The next step is to make a large ring front sight.
