Nothing makes you smile more than when load testing for a bullet is finally done. :)

The Rifle is a Remington 700 5R mil spec.

Last year I was using 178 Amax bullets but my best load with them was only pushing 2530fps. (42.5gn varget)

I decided for this year to switch over to the 175smk and am having some great results.
This was the ladder test I did 2 weeks ago. The top node you see is 44.5 and 45.4gn - the rest of the test was done in .5 inc. Distance of 600y

I tested some more last weekend with the chrono out and had some good results of over 2700fps. Exactly what I was looking for.

This is what I came up with today.

Inner circle is 1" total target is 2"

Distance of 150y, 10 shot string.
Brass trimmed to 2.005, Coal of roughly 2.880. 2.288 on the comparator. 44.8gn of varget and cci br2 primers. Winchester brass sorted by weight.

I have some temporary rings on the gun right now that are to tall and make it a real pain in the a$$ to get comfortable behind the gun. I have some burris signature zee rings on the way that fit much nicer and im sure things will get better from there. Fyi, bottom 3 shots, totally my fault.

Pretty dam happy anyway. Just in time for summer !
 
hmmm interesting that your getting resaults with hot and long loads...(hmm that sounds wrong) im getting better results with coal around 2.800 and 42.5gn varget out of my 5r. granted i havnt got it past 200yds yet but just odd that same rifle yeilds resualts with such different loads
 
Every rifle load has 2 good nodes. Your using the lower node. If u chrono ur rounds I bet you will be around 2500fps. You wana use ur fastest load to get that bullet to stay well stabilized at longer range.
 
One more thing to think about when you kick it up is the faster the better bc you get and less wind deflection.

When you go hotter just make sure not to use federal brass. It's to soft. I get pressure sighns at 44.5 gn.

My lyman load manual says 45.2 is max. With Winchester brass I've had no problem.
 
Haha too funny!That is the exact same load that shoots the best out of my 5r barrel as well!
Everything is pretty much exactly the same except I use Norma brass.Very interesting!

Nope. Does not work that way. RPM for stability is determined by the length of the bullet (a constant) RPM and air density. The latter two are variables.

If you do your load development in the spring (colder, denser air) you should not have any problem in the summer.

But, as the bullet passes through the air, it compresses the air - increasing density. The faster the bullet, the more the compression. If there is a stability problem, it will manifest itself in the first hundred yards and blow the group. If the bullet is stable over the first 100 yards, it becomes even more stable as it gos down range.

As a bullet travels down range, it slows and reduces the compression - increasing stability.

Mathematically, stability is S. You want a stability of about 1.3. Less can fail in some circumstances and more will slightly open groups for reasons I won't go into here. But too much is not good.

The increased stability by going from 2500 to 2700 fps is not an issue, unless the bullet/twist was marginal to start with - say, 1:16 barrel with the 175. A 1:14 would be just fine.
