The ORA has use of military shooting ranges. Camp Borden has three conventional ranges, including Mons, a 32 position 1000 yard range.

Langemark is a series of simple 100 ranges, each separated by the others by side berms about 15 feet high. Today the ORA sponsored a shooting practice day at Langemark. We shot 100 yards in the morning at 20 yards (handguns) in the afternoon.

I took a bunch of rifles I have never shot before, or have not shot in a long time. It was very interesting to shoot so many in one day. It made comparisons so much more relevant.

I mounted black aiming marks on the back of Fig 11 targets. For scoped rifles, a black patch sufficed. For iron sights, I stapled on a black 10” square.

I have to clean the rifles tonight. Tomorrow I will measure all the groups and make the log entries and rank the results. All shooting was with milsurp ball bullets. I shot off bean bags made from wool socks and dried navy beans. Light to transport, but effective.

A few quick observations:

My eyes are too old to use open sights effectively. Peep sights on a long barreled rifles are workable. The best sight picture was with the Ross – the longest sight radius.

I wanted to shoot a bunch of carbines and short rifles and compare the results. The FR8 was a delight. I love the little wheel in the rear sight that gives me three different range elevations (for 200, 300 and 400 I suspect.) 2.5” at 100 with irons.

I also had some full-sized rifles to compare. All rifles wre shot with either milsurp (7.62x54) or handloads made with milsurp 147gr bullets. (308Win and 303Brit)

The SVT40 seems to kick harder than the M44, although the M44 has a bigger fireball and muzzle blast.

The Mosin Nagant sniper held zero very well from the last time I shot it last year. Grouped well with milsup ammo, too.

The Australian #4 (1.8”) shot about the same as my fake #4T (1.6”) made with an old 308 match barrel.

The least comfortable rifle to shoot prone is the #4. Too much drop at the comb.

I shot 4 different flavours of 7.62x39 through a scoped bolt rifle. CZ surplus was best.

Both Norinco M14s functioned perfectly and grouped far better than I expected. A Norc M14 group is shown below. 100 yards with iron sights (and old eyes).
