I was thinking this today after a three hour range session ~700 rounds - 450 .22, 250 9mm and used five different guns. STI Spartan 9mm, P226 9mm, M&P 9mm, Glock 17 9mm and gsg 1911.

How often do you get to the/a range, how long do you typically go for and how do you choose what guns to take with you? When you take more than two or three, how do you choose how much to use any one of them?

I have been finding lately that I have a hard time choosing and focusing on a single gun. Obviously this impedes the natural progression of proficiency with that weapon. On the other hand maybe it makes for a more well rounded shooter? My problem is I cant choose just one and if I do, I feel like I am neglecting others.

Curious about others.

I usually go to the range because I get the urge to do something specific. I will bring only revolvers one day or just milsurps another. Like you pointed out if you bring a little of everything it can be a bit of a chore and it is really suppose to be fun. What ammo I have on hand will also dictate what to bring. I prefer to concentrate on just one or two things when I go.
I try not to switch from rifle to pistol and/or shotgun in the same session. Moving around to the different ranges at the club can chew up the limited time I have available. I am lucky that the club is not too far away and I would just rather make a separate trip on another day.
The only time I will bring a big variety is when I am introducing a new person to the sport. Even if they don't fire everything, at least they get to see the different guns they have heard of or seen on TV. One thing I always try to do (especially with new people) is to start and end the days events with the 22.

I try to get to the range not less than every 2 weeks (more if I can) I use as much ammo as I need to (as many as 1,000 rounds of one caliber in one day), and generally speaking (9 times out of 10) I shoot 1 pistol.

When I go to the range, I bring 2 pistols at the Time. My ruger mkIII .22 is always there and Another 9mm or .45acp. If I go for rifle, it's thé same thing. One .22 lr and Another one. I don't bring more than 2 firearms at the Time. Each session is 2-3 hours.

I've been told that you'll never get good with one gun if you're shooting several different ones, at one outing.
I take a .22, 9mm, 40S&W and a 45ACP, on most days, and shoot them in that order.
No bigger a let down than changing from the .45, going to the .22.
I'm not getting particularly good with them, but I'm having fun!

Today I got out to a sweet outdoors range for the first time. It is about an hour from where I live or else I would go more often. I shot 500 .22 and 200 9mm in two hours. That is the most I have ever shot in one outting. Normally I am shooting paper at an indoors range taking my time(100-150 rounds in an hour or so). Today I was lighting up steel and having a blast!

I only have the 2 pistols (gsg 1911 and glock17) so I can't really say I "only" take 2 pistols with me. But I do think taking a .22 and only one other pistol is a smart idea.

I think you need to decide which 9mm works the best for you and choose that as the pistol you want to become most proficient with. You will have to accept that your are pistols are just part of the collection and enjoy them once in awhile.

I try not to let the collection get to big for this reason. ;) (Or so I tell myself)

As the saying goes, "Beware the man with one gun!"

I try to have different guns in different calibres, and usually if I'm going to the range I will bring everything I have ammo loaded for. ;)

I used to always bring 2. My G17 and something else. Lately I have just been bringing one pistol because Im broke and can't afford bullets. Sometime's I'll bring the .22 and shoot it first, then blast off 30-50 rds of something bigger for fun just before I leave.

I go to the range on Monday when it isn't busy and usually take 3-4 guns. Just got a Winchester Model 94 30-30 so will take that and a 1911.1873 SAA and a cap and ball revolver this next week. I like to use all of my guns over a period of time to make sure they are working and not rusting away. The black powder guns are great because it takes so long to load them that I never run out of "ammo".

Most of my guns are neglected as far as range time goes. Don't remember the last time I took a .22 rifle to the range (which is a shame because they are probably my favorite to shoot). My Springfield Mil Spec always makes the trip, usually with one or two other pistols.

The sad truth of my current situation is I'm more of an "owner" than a "shooter" these days. If I can get out for an hour or two every couple months I'm doing well. Work really cuts into my everything else schedule.

Due to work/life/kid restraints I can only get to the range once a month. I try to maximize the time by shooting specific time measured drills. 233 rounds for pistol and 250 rounds for rifle. I usullay only bring one rifle and one pistol. That's about all I can manage before I feel like I'm not able to pay attention to the details any longer. If I have to test new equipment or a new muzzle device it takes longer.

I shoot in the average year, 15 to 24 matches. I do a lot of travelling. Generally, Cowboy Action, Action Pistol, 3 Gun Matches(Rimfire & Centerfire). With the limited time left thats not covered by reloading my visits to the range consist of zeroing cometition guns and testing new loads. Choice of guns depends on the discipline of the next match I attend.

No bigger a let down than changing from the .45, going to the .22.

Where as I find if my accuracy is not great on the smaller calipers I'll throw a cylinder of .500S&W into the mix and I find holding and controlling the recoils on. The 9's or .22LR is considerably easier.

I will go for a few hours (as long as I can, shortest was an hour, longest was just over 8 hours) and I will bring my pistol case which holds 6 - 7 and then I can decide when I get there and I will generally only shoot 2 to 3 of them which also cuts down my cleaning time.

As for number of rounds, have to have a minimum of 100 rounds per gun, if the .22 is coming out then it's usually a brick of 500 that comes along

For me , this is my personal take, I only take two guns to the range. 22LR for fun plinking and 9mm Gen4 for serious practice ... About 500 rounds of .22LR and 150-250rounds of 9mm. I am so used to Glock 17. Started with Gen3 and now Gen4. I am not the greatest shooter, but I fair better with mid size back strap on Gen4. Bonus is that with mid size strap, Gen4 feels very comfortable to grip.

Once a month or if I can , twice a month.

90% of the time i take both of my STI's. Almost identical and both are 9mm. I shoot 300-500 rnds each time and go to the club 3-4 times a week.
Sometimes and it's rare, i take a shotgun or my AR with me. My hunting rifles come out in the fall and that is for a little trigger time and to check zero.

I hit the range about twice a week... and since i only have 1 pistol...it makes it pretty easy to choose what to bring....lol.. but I ALWAYS bring my 10/22 anyways..just cause its fun to shoot.. :)

I used to go a lot more but I have less and less time left over in a week it seems now.
I use to bring everything from pistols and revolvers to milsurp and hunting rifles. It depended on the time of year really what I'd shoot most, summer and fall would be hunting rifles, winter and spring everything else.
The last couple years I developed some extreme allergies to animal hair and dander that I can no longer control. After a trip to emerg from the last reaction, I was forced into retirement from hunting by the wife and many of my rifles have been exchanged for range queens.
Now when I go it is usually a few hours, 100-200 rounds from the AR and 150-300 rounds of of which ever pistol I feel like working with, which as of late has mostly been 9mm with the Beretta 92. My rem 700 LTR used to see a few hundred rounds a month, but now sits at home most trips.
I also kept a couple of my favorite hunting rifles, CZ .375 h&h and Marlin .45-70 gg but they haven't been out in a couple years either. A shame really. All of a sudden I am feeling the urge to take them out for a trip.
