Range time or continued training without PAL

Hi,
New to GN. Great site!

I'm interested in training and/or getting time on a range, especially in August 2013 when I'll be back in Canada for a month's holidays. Although Canadian born and bred, I don't hold the PAL as I usually work or train abroad as a private security consultant.

I have completed [it reads a bit like part of my CV, but it relates to my question]:
@ Trojan Securities International: Specialist Tactical Weapons Operator / Advanced Urban Warfare / Kidnap Prevention & Hostage Rescue / Advanced Operator Pistol - Shotgun - Rifle/Carbine.
@ NRA: Pistol / PPITH / PPOTH Basic & Advanced / Rifle & Shotgun (latter 2 completed, registration pending)
CPO
CSO/SSO (ISPS)
Tacmed

The Trojan/NRA were done in August this year, so I'm current on certs for most pistols, carbines, rifles and shotguns.

Given this experience and training, what I'd like are your ideas about the feasiblity of training without the PAL, as even the RCMP site's CFP #1207 states: "Exception: A licence is not necessary to borrow a firearm if the borrower remains under the direct and immediate supervision of a properly licensed adult aged 18 or older."

As I understand it, it usually takes 2 months to clear a PAL application after passing the exams, so I won't have enough time back to challenge the exam, apply for and receive the PAL and then get on the range.

Any ideas appreciated.
Thank you.

impressive as your resume reads, regardless of your quals, unless you are a canadian peace officer, you will need a R-PAL to own and purchase a pistol/ar etc. However, you are just borrowing buddy's, then he has to be with you (as long as buddy has RPAL/transport license). Without RPAL you can't even borrow buddy's pistols/ar.

I've got similar quals and in the same field, but still require RPAL. Kinda like a Navy captain required to get the boat license to operate a recretional craft.

Thanks, NZA, for your feedback.

I only thought to list the resume-like details to demonstrate current certifications and abilities as it effects suitability for training, so I hope it didn't come across the wrong way...

I'm not planning to own or purchase a weapon or ammo in Canada in the immediate future, just wondering if I can do some training that includes range/kill house/etc with live fire/simunitions at a training centre without my own RPAL, essentially using the training centre/tc instructor's RPAL to train under?

Thanks again.

Short of it is yes, as long as you are under direct supervision of a person who is properly licensed. Finding a person/place to do it is another issue.

no probs. btw, I had to take a refresher for the kidnap incident management course through controlrisk in the UK. its always intense.

Yep, K & R was intense... Thankfully, we used Simuntions for the shoot/no shoot part of it, making it ~somewhat~ less intense.

Control Risks is a great outfit. Their intel available online is always top notch, so I would expect the same for training.
My 2 lead instructors at Trojan, though it's in the States, were ex-SBS, ex-Royal Marines from the UK and they fit the bill exactly!

You're in Nanaimo? Do you sail or boat? I'm seriously leaning towards a liveaboard on the WC in a few years, and Nanaimo is high up on the list, along with Victoria.
Keep safe.

Yeah, the CR guys I work with are all mostly ex-royal marines.
I don't sail/boat which is a shame of a waste of living on the island. I'm 6 months of the year overseas, and home usually for the winter, so not really conducive to sailing/boating. There's quite a few opportunities for liveaboards, on the big yachts that dock here. Although I'd have no idea how to get into it.

I meant buying a 40-footer and living aboard her year-round, not being a purser on someone's super yacht with stcw and a hospitality course. :)
Marsec/Ship security officer is interesting enough and no need to worry about getting tips.
