I wondered at what range most shooters feel is their comfortable maximum range for accurately shooting a deer in open territory. To clarify I’m interested to know when shooting standing, off the shoulder, not bench rest shooting.

Yep 200 is not uncommon for me to take a deer from the standing but I'll take a more stable possition if I have time and a view.

There are not many people who can hit a target the size of a deer's vitals at 350 yards or greater standing/unsupported with any regularity and I doubt that the people who voted there could. To test yourself put up a 10" paperplate at a measured 350 yards and see if you can hit it even once out of a box of ammo. Bet you can't.

Thank you for staying on topic and explaining your self-imposed limitations.......

At a deer size target, anything beyond 200 yards gets me looking for a rest of some sort, or a more solid position than offhand. I use the pieplate analogy also, and keeping more than 85% of your offhand shots on that pieplate beyond 250 is a tough proposition for all but an elite few. Regards, Eagleye.

I said 150 Meters...........but even up to that distance I'd still take a Rest if available, Thanks:wave:

Yes I can and have shot Deer at ranges much further then that......all with solid rests however ;)

I was thinking the same thing myself. If your talking off hand, the closer the better. The way I look at it, if your over 100 yards, and out to 300, (My personal max, period) you have plenty of time to park your butt on the ground and brace yourself. As for long range hunters, GET CLOSER! I voted 100 yards, but in truth it would probably be less.
