Ranger single shot 12 gauge

Hi guys,

I've got a Ranger single shot 12 gauge, very similar to a Cooey 84. It's it pretty good shape - a few rust spots here and there, just surface though and it cleaned up pretty good. All the parts have matching serial numbers. It's definitely an older model as the spacer on the fore-end is made of metal and not plastic.

My question is, how rare is this? I'm thinking it's not too rare at all and that there must be thousands of these guns out there but I want to be sure before I send it to the gunsmith. I'm planning on having him install a recoil pad (which will require shortening the stock to maintain the LOP), shorten the barrel and install choke tubes so it'll be a little more convenient to hunt small game in thick brush.

I just don't want to cut it up if it's in any way rare or valuable. Like I said, I'm sure it's not, I just want to be sure.

Not really that valuable but the work you want to put in is gonna cost you. I figure by the time your done you've got a couple hundred invested, plus tubes and the cost of the gun. If it were me, I'd think you'd be better off to leave it as is, a great hunting gun and buy somthing else. The Mavrick 88 is a longer gun but will probably cost less then to mod your classic.
 
Well, I really love single shot shotguns when hunting and I can't stand a barrel longer than about 24" - even if it's a single - as I tend to hunt in rather thick brush. I used to have a Cooey 840 with a 21" barrel (which I found to be just about a pefect length) with a mod choke tube and simply loved it. I broke more clays and bagged more birds with that gun... still can't figure out why I sold it.

I'm just trying to make another gun similar to it again.
