Depends on the game, IPSC is pretty quick. First off you gotta be a safe shooter, if safe, fill your boots.

because many people cannot handle it.
Sure their first round might hit their target.
The second might hit the backer board.
The third comes close to the backer.
It just gets worse from there........
Mind you I shoot IPSC so I always use rapid fire but then again I went through some training first.

What's the point of rapid fire...? Sure in a game like ipsc it's required, but... As far as plinking at your range isn't the point of shooting to get hits on your target...?
These kids who show up at the range with their POS SKS and a crate of Czech surplus who just like to rip off rounds as fast as they can are a hazard...
Makin' all sorts of noise and tearing up the grass... and what do they have to show for it... One or two holes on paper and the rest..? Gawd knows where.
What's worse are the youngin' who do their rapid POS SKS firin' from the hip hollywood style... Goddamn it, pullup those baggy pants and f* the f* off already!
And while your at it... Get offa my lawn!

I have asked this before, I can't find any good reason why rapid firing a .22 should not be allowed, plus, loading up a 30 round mag is just plain fun.
For hand gunning, with some training, I can't see why not, of course muzzle flip and rising bullets are much more of a concern, so I can understand a rule against it without a BB or equivalent.

You have to know what the gun will do, ie don't hand a factory loaded ruger 454 to a teen , and turn away.
Its pactice, double tap, double tap, when you feel good, and your not tearing up the kit that folks took time to build then you can close the gap to the point where your mag is empty.
Caution with light shotguns, they can and will get away from you.
All good , keep the ammo makers happy, avoid having old stock, burn it off.

That's pretty much exactly what the guy did when I was in vegas.
He left me and my friend alone in the range (it was both of our first time, and we had a 9mm and a .45).

If you are wondering the proper term for shooting from the hip its actually called "Beirut Offhand".
Here is my 2 cents worth.
There are two kinds of rapid fire.
Controlled rapid fire ( the shooter knows where all the bullets are going ).
Uncontrolled rapid fire. ( better known as spray & spray ).
I don't think one has to be a genius to differentiate between the 2 and figure out which one I don't mind.

It's the fear at some ranges of the muzzle rising during rapid fire and bullets leaving the range. In Quebec - soon to come to Morontario I'm told -this has led to the "blue sky"{ rule, ie every range has to have baffles or other devices that prevent anyone from actually aiming at the sky (the Quebec shooters I know tell me all the incidents of escaping bullets were from police and security guards, but not living there I can't confirm it).
Of course Elmer says that a real hunter man can shoot a running deer through the heart at 600 yards, so nobody needs more than one shot anyway...

Back some years ago, when I was just a wet-behind the ears 18 and was a newbie member of a club that shot indoors during winter at the local police station at the basement range, I was shooting a lovely 4" Colt Official Police 38spc one evening. I had fired slow and steady for a number of strings. We shot always shot bullseye style with 5 rds each string. The gun was a beauty and I had practiced a significant amount with it. Had a beauty of a single actiona and double action pull and was the only gun with fixed sights that I have ever shot that hit to line of sight. So I started shooting it double action with nice results. Then the next string I just let her have it double action at a fairly fast pace. Well, I admit it might have thrown some of the guys off their concentration, but the range master who liked me got a bit agitated and started questioning why I had done this. My response was I was just target shooting and seeing how fast I could hit the paper. He was unhappy and skeptical until he cleared the line and we returned out targets and mine were all in a nice under 3" group in the centre. After the that he would say to me, I never get to shoot and you shoot all the time, how's about you take over the range and I put some downrange? So I would be acting range officer for a couple strings. Other guys did not care for this entirely with a young dude as RO.
The sad part of this story is that I sold that revolver for peanuts. Today I would love to have it back. I put a pile of SWC target loads through it and it was just as perfect when I sold it as when I got it. Was a surplus police (OPP I think?) gun when they switched to semis.

controlled rapid fire is a nice thing
but i still don;t trust my hands enough so i shoot slow trying to get a good aim
but think about a complete newbie just rapid firing. he will probably be taking 45 degree shots after the 3rd or 4th
i wouldnt like to have such a person shooting right next to me
