So, I had to shoot at either 25yrds or 100yrds, I picked 25.
RAR .22lr Compact, Vortex Diamondback 2-7x, set at 5x(for comfortable eye relief), cheap front rest, unsupported rear, CCI Minimags 36gr HPs
Little bit of wind was mostly from the rear.

  • The short bolt lift was nice and quick. Cleared the scope with ease.
  • Sometimes working the action, was a little rough feeling. It wasn't a constant feeling, but the odd time I felt it I noted it in my mind.
  • The safety, was in the perfect location - tang, but kind of rough. It took some force to move it at times to the the fire position, after working it a bunch of times at home, it's a little better but still gives a very positive 'click'
My other experience with a tang safety is my browning deer rifle, a lot smoother, but it's nice to have both rifles with similar safeties.
  • Trigger was great, no complaints. Can't give you a weight of pull, just that I wouldn't change it.
  • High comb stock was good. Scope like I said, I'm still not impressed. High comb is too high for irons.

I didn't buy the rifle for target shooting, I find the current accuracy results acceptable and seems to be room to improve with practice.
I bought it to hopefully take couple rabbits with in the fall along with small hobby farm use.
The safety being rough is the biggest & most consistent issue but still a minor one.
I had no problems sniping the broken pieces of clay pigeons left at the range, so it's at least a good plinker.
I like the gun, although all the shooting was done from the bench, handling the rifle at home it's very easy & quick to shoulder into a good sight picture.
I don't believe my results is the true accuracy potential of the rifle - out of the box, just what I could do at the time which may not be impressive but I'm working on that.

I only had the two brands to try. Another brand might of been better, or maybe minimags are the best, ymmv.

First target is a bit of mess, started with cci quiets and they weren't impressing so I switched to the minimags which seem to tighten things up.
CCI quiets were top left and the uncircled 5shot center. The mess on the right edge was also the cci quiets.

Second & third target I seemed to be settling down a bit.

Thanks for posting! Im now even happier I went with a savage btvs.

I wouldn't but to each their own, the btvs is heavy barrel & priced over $200 more than I paid for the rar.
I wanted something handy, if I need to reach out and touch something I got my .223

At 25m, it should be better then that.......look at getting a rimfire scope maybe, parralax could be why the grouping is so bad.
I'd send a .22 back as defective if that's how it shot out of the box at 25m.

Somethings gotta be wrong there lw. Ive shot a lot of .22 rifles and I can't remember any of them shooting that bad. Umm by the way, what is and RAR?

Ruger american rimfire.
Yea, I don't like the scope, looking for one with an AO.

I seen others covering their 25yrds groups with a quarter and saying it's good. I can do that with a couple of them. Mostly it's the scope/me.
Would still be a dead rabbit.

I agree those groups are terrible. I had my new CZ 452 out and at 25 yds even cheap remington subsonics where all in one hole. You can see my results in the which $750 rifle is the most accurate.

Nice how's the rifle set up and bench?
I'm gonna change scopes and get a more solid rest and give it another go

Its real nice but getting pricey ,the scope alone was $708 all in deliverd from prophet river. The rest I really like cheapest place is amazon.ca around $120.I would get some standard velocity ammo and some subsonics if your shooting at 25 yds. Not sure what ammo is available in your area but the Aguila SV and subs are pretty decent and CT is selling them.Good luck let us know how we can help.

Unless your technique is dreadful (not suggesting it is)....your RAR really doesn't like that ammo. Also likely your scope choice is affecting your groups too. For inexpensice AO or SF scopes, consider the HAWKE line of scopes. Another option is an older Bushnell Banner AO. The models with AO start in the 4-12x magnification range, don't think you'll find a 3-9AO in one of those. I have a 4-12AO in mint condition, picked it up in the EE for about $125.

Parallax issues become a bigger factor when you're zoomed-in to the highest magnification, so start by backing-out to maybe 3-4x, then run some quality, subsonic ammo through it like CCI standard velocity. I'm sure your groups will tighten-up a little. A scope better-suited to .22 shooting distances and a little time trying different ammo...I'm sure you'll be down in the quarter club @ 25M in no time.

CT has a ton of Aguila in so I'll grab a few boxes. What about the simmons 3-9x32 AO scope, cheap little thing but people seem to give it good reviews.
Heading to cabelas this week and they have them in stock. Going to get a cheap rest there to, or at least a rear bag.

I would be looking for at least 12x.really helps at distance.Cabelas has the Crossfire ii Vortex on sale 4-16x50 for $269 ,might be over your budget but you'll never regret too much scope.I have one on my Savage BV which I have up FS on the EE

Also this one has the BDC reticle which is a little finer cross hairs than the V plex.

for lack of something better to do and boredom today i took my RAR and my Savage BTVLSS out today and did some shooting.
rotated back and forth with 5 shot groups.
RAR, BTV, rinse, repeat.

numbers;
RAR 1 - 0.918
RAR 2 - 0.956
RAR 3 - 0.819
Co worker 1 - 1.635

Savage 1 - 0.773
Savage 2 - 0.841
Savage 3 - 0.656

so you can see that the BTV was shooting just a hair tighter then the RAR.
but the question is..... is that hair worth double the price?
$315 is what i paid for my RAR, my BTV was double that.
both guns running pretty much the same glass and used same ammo for both guns, CCI Blazer FMJ.
distance was 25 meters (so 82 feet)

Great shooting. What scopes are you using on the two rifles?

I have a ton of blazer ammo kicking around so I'll try that next time as well.

Cabela's Pine Ridge scopes.
i got onto their glass a little while ago, inexpensive and nice and clear, really liking what they are putting out.
best glass for the price so far that i can find.

Those would be decent groups at 100 yards, but for 25 yards, they are disgusting. Try some different ammunition, hopefully the accuracy will improve dramatically.

I would expect almost any decent .22LR, Rugar American or Savage BTV, to post better results at 25 meters than any of the targets shown. The OP should get a scope with adjustable parallax (either Adjustable Objective or Side Focus). There are a number of models that won't break the bank. Take a look at Hawke Varmint scopes. They are SF and come in ranges of 3-12, 4-16, and 6-24 with pricing up to about $240ish for the 6-24 model.
