Rare - No.5 MK 1 Lee Enfield Type I Bayonet - Value?

Hey there,

Does anyone know the value of a No.5 Mk 1 Lee enfield type I bayonet?

Most No.5 Mk1 bayonets are type II, with two screws in the handle.

I currently am helping sort through my grandpas estate and found a No.5 Mk 1 Type I bayonet with a single screw in the handle, this has been referenced as incredibly rare here:

So rare I'm having trouble finding a sale example, I've attached a pic for reference.

Collectors source might be worth reaching out to and hopefully they have some insight to offer. Sending it to an auction can go only one of two ways and you may not like the outcome, especially if most folks don't know there even is a type I. I would also reach out to IWM as they might be interested to document it as I even have a hard time finding a picture of one online.

I doubt you're looking at much more than a Type 2 bayonet as I think you may have a hard time finding a buyer that cares to the degree they will pay a premium over a standard one.

If you're looking for cash, I would say just hold on to it, I don't think what you'll get is worth more than having your grandfathers old bayonet.

Collector's Source should never be a reference for pricing. They've been out to lunch for as long as I've known about them

Yeah its strange, its really hard to find any info honestly.
Contacting a museum is an interesting idea, specially as im close to the IWM at the moment.

Hi Thomservo. There is a possibility that your bayonet is a forgery. Markings on the blade ricasso are not clear in your pic.
If it was an original item then I suggest a value of $700 - $800. But I wouldn't buy it unless I could see multiple pics of each
part and also with the grips removed. John T.

I wouldn't think its a forgery as my grandad had quite a large collection from back in the day -- and I dont think he would have bothered with getting a single screw bayonet -- he would have disliked the idea it was prone to cracking.

That being said, it could, of course, be possible -- really appreciate the info. I'll take the grips off and take more pictures.
