Hi Guys ,

I just got a rare Tikka rifle in , its model is the M65A , and its the A thats makes it different from all others , some say its the father to the Sako TRG sniper series , and if you look hard you can see some elements in it .

Made for a short period of time in the early 90s , 308 only , long action , with a plastic sleeve at rear , so bolt is very smooth in operation , 5rd single stack mag , very unusall stock design , has a alloy block under action .

According to a buddy of mine at Sako FI, that is indeed the gun the TRG came from. Nice score. how's it shoot?

Predecessor to the Tikka M595 Master Sporter built in the late 90's up to 2003?

That is a really nice find, great pictures, Thanks for sharing.
Aside from the fact that it is likely an awesome shooter, it must have fairly good collector value ?

All my guns are for shooting , so I tend only to be interested in classics & current stuff that actually work well & shoot well also .
This Tikka , is from a time when they made their own barrels , cut rifled I think , and the M65A & the older M55/65 had very good reps as highly accurate rifles .
Not concerned with collecting as a so called investment , I buy guns I find interesting & can use .

Cheers Chris

I have an old M 55 308 heavy barrel Varmint model and I've put so many rounds through it I've lost count.
The rifle is and always has been crazy accurate and will easily hold its own in 300 mtr. matches providing I do my part.
After having several M 55 / 65s in different chamberings I am convinced that they turned out awesome barrels not to mention superb overall workmanship...

Outstanding!!!! I'd have grabbed that as well if given the chance.

I just got my Model 65 Sporter back from a re-barrel. I still need to have it blued and I'm considering an alternative due to cost. The first two groups looked really promising but Tikka can't take credit for that.

Have I got a barrel for you!!! The original .308 barrel was re-chambered in 308 Norma Mag. It was just insane to fire with the style of stock the Sporter wore. The smith who did the barrel wanted to thread it for a brake and that's what will happen eventually.

Wonderful AND very nice rifle ... it looks like an M595/695 action in a particularly nice stock with a full action length bedding block. The bolt is certainly not like any Tikka M65 I have seen as it lacks the 2 additional locking lugs of an older M65 and it differs from the TRG because the TRG has 3 forward locking lugs (like the Sako 75's and 85's) ... certainly appears to be a highly modified 595/695 action. Congratulations!!!

I have had Sako TRGs for along time now , since they 1st brought out the TRG-21 , and now have a TRG-22 , so I know what they are like .

RE : the models , NO , its not based on the 595/695 series , its the series before that , the M558/658 series .

Cheers Chris

I think they where built only for a couple of years , maybe 89-90 , as the Sako TRG-21 was about '91 ? , the written UK article I have is dated March 1990 .
I think it had a rather short life as the TRG I think replaced IT .

Cheers Chris

:) I suppose so .. But I have examined the factory instructions (and the included parts diagrams) for both the 595/695 and 558/658 and can find no difference
(http://www.tikka.fi/pdf/manuals/old/Tikka558_658.pdf) (http://www.tikka.fi/pdf/manuals/old/tikka_popular_rh.pdf) .... but would certainly appreciate understanding the differences if you wouldnt mind sharing your insight.

As far as I know , its only the 558/658 , that has the large plastic insert at the rear of the bolt for smooth cycling & less wobble etc , the later 595/695 does not have the palstic collar , also the 558 is round action , and the later 595 is square etc , so quite different .
So in short although they both use a 2 lung bolt thats similar , the actions are very different , ie round & square in profile
