Well, I need to take back almost everything I said about the recent import of RC K98's.
I dropped into P&D today to pick up my RC K98 crate (empty - $50). While in town, I thought I might as well sample the K98's on hand.
They only had two on the rack. byf44 (very common) and an ax41 (but sadly had an ugly straight bolt). Other than that the rifles had no stock repairs, but they were not what I was interested in.
I then checked out the SKS rifles and the fresh batch of SVT's. One flamboyant gent really wanted a Kovrov SVT and to my surprise, I was actually able to help find him one on the rack. I already have two Kovrov SVT's so why not share the wealth and knowledge...I told him if it was a 1940 Kovrov that it was mine, but if a 1941 Kovrov he was more than happy to it.
I guess Karma served me well. I decided to go to the handgun section as often they have a few milsups as well. 1x SKS, 3x SVT's (I selected a nice Tula 1943 with Naval Stock) and 2x K98's. I looked at the first one - ce41 (not interested) and when he handed me the second one I saw bnz42. Ohh...I don't really need one of those, but then I had to take a double take, wait that isn't just a bnz42 but a Single Rune bnz42...for $599...with no stock repairs...no peened markings and two original k98 pouches...SCORE!!!!
After close inspection, it had everything that said this was a legit Single Rune rifle. No serial on the barrel, serial on the left receiver (alphabet soup), no Reichs Eagle on the top of the receiver with an authentic looking single rune, only one 77 proofing stamp on the right receiver and no proofing stamps on the right side of the rear site base.
Just proves that despite most of these rifles being grade 2-3, there are some gems to be found. Really not bad at $599 as you can hand select free of charge, pouches are at least worth $40-50 for a pair IMHO. My first K98 was an RC from MILARM for $550, so no inflation in 5+ years....
