I rarely post on CGN because the only questions I have are retarded ones. But ive looked around for answers and turned up with a goose egg so ill ask here. Please redirect if you know of a place that covers this in depth.

I recently bought a RC k98 on impulse one day without knowing that RCs are considerably lower quality than intact ones. What can i do to refurb the stock and make the rifer as optimal as possible?

Thanks for your time

As per the two comments,

Im not trying to make it like an original, i just want to get it into as good a condition for my own sake. Make the stock better looking, perhaps anything that will make it operate mechanically better. That sort of thing.

Well, if you want to clean the stock up that is easy to do but be warned that doing so will reduce any collectible value that the rifle has and will be considered a form of bubba-ing by many. With that warning in mind you can: remove stock from rifle and clean off with anything from a mild soap all the way through to Easy Off oven cleaner with the latter being the most aggressive clean. When the stock is dry you can sand down the stock and then you can refinish with any product you like - from tung or linseed oil all the way through to commercial re staining products.

If I am not mistaken, the RC's have a shellac treatment on the stock correct? if so, C1858 or whatever its called furniture stripper will remove it nicely without damaging or staining the stock. After removing the old finish, use 0000 fine steel wool, not sand paper, to sand the stock. This will minimize the amount of material removed. Afte that, you can treat the stock with whatever finish you like. Boiled Linseed oil is a pretty standard finish, Tung oil is another traditional finish and can be seen as an improvement over linseed oil.

I had an interesting method for removing flaking shellac...

I would take some scotch tape and apply it to the surface of the stock, when I peeled the tape off the shellac came off with it.
