the shot is used to help zerro balance the scale.. can you balance it out at zerro ok?

You need to re-zero your scale. Make sure it is sitting absolutely level. Then set your poises all on zero. If the pointer is now pointing to a spot below the centering line on the scale body, you need to add weight to that space under the pan until it is exactly lined up. When that is done. tighten the screw and you should be done. Nice to check it after with a set of guaranteed weights, but in lieu of that, if you have a couple of different weights of Nosler ballistic tips or some match bullets, they will give you an idea of how accurate your scale is now. If you don't feel confident doing it this way, send it back to RCBS. They will fix it for you, probably free. Regards, Eagleye.

RCBS warranty is great, sent back 2 #505 scales from late 70s this July had them back in three weeks all refurbished and working perfect.I only had to pay shipping one way.

I don't think this method will work properly.

What you need to do is get a certified check weight then.
Put the powder pan on the scale and set both poises to 0. Using the thumb screw set the pointer to exactly 0.
Once this is done set your poises to match your check weight. (if your check weight is 50 gr set poises for 50 gr)
Now place your check weight in the powder pan.
If the pointer is not at 0 you will need to add or remove the lead shot from the space under the pan to bring the pointer to exactly 0 again.

Hope this helps.
