RCBS Caliper Dial did a 180...WTF?

I was checking the OAL of some loads and noticed that all of a sudden they were .050" too long... Or so it appeared until I realized the needle was pointing straight down when it should be pointing straight up. I adjusted the dial to compensate and the caliper still appears accurate. Kind of annoying though since the numbers are now upside down.. This happen to anyone else? I'll be buying a new caliper but will have to keep using this one for tonight.
 
On the caliper dial face there is a little knob at the bottom(6 o'clock), that is used for zeroing the caliper dial. when ever I use my caliper I wipe the jaw faces clean, close jaws and check the position of the needle to read zero.
occasional if i have rough handled of held onto for a wile i check to see if the little knob is loose.
its probably fine just came loose.
 
All that knob does is hold the dial in place. Closing to caliper should bring it to zero. You should never have to spin the dial half-way round to get it to read properly.
 
Seen it lots of times even with expensive Mitutoyo calipers (although there is a quick way to fix the Mitutoyo calipers). It has skipped a tooth like joe-nwt stated, not a big deal. Just tell everyone you had them converted over to left hand operation.
 
On most Dial Calipers there is a spot (tiny hole) where you can insert a paper clip type wire to re-zero the dial - any instructions with your unit or have you tossed them out ?

It's been a problem with dial calipers since they were invented. The biggest culprit is usually opening or closing the caliper too fast causing it to skip, and of course crap in the track.
