RCBS collet puller

I am going into my 2nd year of reloading. All I have is the internet and my reloading books as teachers, the rest is trial and error. Anyway, I have inherited all of my reloading gear, and I got no manuals with it or anything.

My question is, with my RCBS collet style bullet puller, how does it work? Do I need a certain collet for each type of bullet? The collet I have atm does not say on it what type of round it is for, and I have attempted to use it to pull some bullets, and I always end up wrecking the bullet and sometimes the brass, so I obviously haven't been able to figure out how it works. I am guessing that I have the wrong collet for the bullets I am attempting to pull (30-06) and thats why I can't figure it out. Any help?

Yep basically each calibre has its own collet (ie .30 cal,22 cal, etc) Look on the side of the collet it should say what cal its for.

yeah I keep getting told that, and I will buy 1. Theres just something about not knowing that I can't deal with ya know?

Buy yourself a kinetic puller. Work great everytime, for any bullet any caliber!

(Except rimfire of course)

I have both and I think that the kinetic puller is very much inferior to a collet puller. A big pain to use.

You have to separate the powder from the bullets and it often pulls the neck off center. The collet style puller is neat, tidy and a lot quicker to use.

Your collet should say the caliber on it somewhere.

Make sure you have the collet plunger unscrewed so that the collet is loose.

Insert the cartridge using the press until the case stops in the die. You should feel no resistance at all and then sudden contact. Use a light touch, no pressure is needed here. If the collet you have is for a smaller caliber the bullet will wedge into it even if the plunger is loose and it won't work.

Snug the plunger down onto the collet and pull the case down out of the die. The bullet should stay behind. If it doesn't try it again with more tightening. You'll get a feel for it.

If you don't have the right collet I would suggest getting it rather than buying the stone axe. - ...I mean kinetic puller.

all it says is RCBS 2 on the side of my collet. I tried to take a pic, but I don't know how to work the macro on my camera. The collets opening is stepped like the stadium seating.

Im assuming that the bullet needs to go into the middle, then you tighten it up and pull it out with the press? This must be for a .270? my .30 cal don't fit in it.

Sounds like the collet on my forster trimmer. My RCBS collets are not stepped at all.Check out a RCBS web site and see the pics maybe that can help.Mine is relatively new so maybe there was a design change?

I have the kinetic (hammer style) puller and it's dirt simple to use, plus the powder is contained inside the barrel of the thing when the bullet drops out... what's not to like?

I don't use mine often but I like the simplicity of it.

Inexpensive also.

Millwright is on the mark on this, that is the RCBS Trimmer Collet you have there, it holds the base of the cartridge my bullet puller collet is not stepped. The system uses a different collet for each caliber.

If you have a trimmer, is there a chance you mixed up the collets?

Good luck, Bob

nah, I inherited all of this stuff, and there isn't anyone that I know to teach me whats what, so Im figuring things out on my own. This came with

and it says bullet puller w/o collet, but the collet was in the puller when I got all this gear, so I just assumed...

so the collet I have is for holding the shells while they get trimmed, and might even be for handgun loads? Since I got some 9mm stuff with everything else, either way I don't need it as I use a lee trimmer.

There is a collet without the steps in the case that says 6mm on the side of it, so Im gonna guess that those 2 are related and useless for me

The base collet is somewhat universal. It will fit a lot of different caliber brass.

You need to pick up the puller collet in the caliber your using. Once you have the correct one, you'll find it very easy to use. I much rather collet pullers than impact pullers.
