I am experiencing problems with priming my 375 H&H hornady brass. tool is new brass is new. I can get them to seat properly by using the rounded end of the primg rod, which it states in the instructions NOT to do. however with using the flat end of the rod it does not have the travel to fully seat the primers. do i have a defective tool, maybe they cut the rod too short.

i can get them to seat properly with the rounded end but it leave a dent in the primer which i dont want.

so basicly i discounted primer pockets or cases being the problem.

I have worked with Hornady brass quite a bit now and I tend to agree that the brass is probably not your problem. Which RCBS priming tool are you using? From what you say it sounds like the bench mounted priming tool rather than the press or a hand tool.

If you are denting the primer, you have compressed the cap, anvil, and priming mixture, and while not dangerous in itself, sooner or later you will fire a primer this way.

If you are referring to the bench mounted tool, the length is the same which ever way the priming rod is placed in the tool, round end down or up. The flat end should have a spring mounted sleeve which holds the primer in place, but perhaps yours unscrewed and became lost leaving only the rod with a threaded hole in the end.

i just micd the rods the little one works the bigger one does not. eg small vs big primer rods.

rifle primer rod - 1.861
small primer - 1.876
