RDS secondary optic

Anyone use an rds as a secondary optic (like mounted on top of scope or canted to the side). I’ve seen these on pictures of some ar-type rifles but not sure if anyone has experience with it.

I’m also curious if this was used by anyone for long range shooting where the rds helps “point” the scope to where you want to shoot?

Yes on both accounts.

On gas guns I run the RDS "piggybacked" on top (12:00) of the optic on a pic rail cap (on top of the scope ring). Zeroed at 50 yards and great for snap shooting.

On my precision bolt guns, I run the RDS at the 1:30 on accessory caps (both MDT and Leupold) that allow you to put pic rails (or specific rds plates) at 10:30, 12:00 or 1:30. I run them at 1:30 as that doesn't increase the overall height of the optic making it easier to fit the rifle through tight ports. I dial on my 600 yard dope (on my main optic) and then put the reticle on a target at 600 and adjust the RDS so the dot is co-zeroed on the 600 yard target. That way, I just have to slightly roll my head to the right to find the dot and anything I put the dot on from 200-1200 is in the field of view of the main optic.
