I've been doing a goodly lot of reading here as of late and I think I've settled on what I'd like to get my hands on in the medium term.

I was thinking of a Tikka T3 Tactical (or Super Varmint), but getting it rebarrelled in .260.

Now, I am given to understand that .260 is based on the .308 casing, so there should be no problems from the action end, but what about a barrel swap? I've heard that Tikkas weren't really "gunsmith-friendly" when it came to modifications.

Any input?

Thanks.

I have a Tikka SS varminter in 260. I'll probably end up selling it this spring, but I'll make that decision once I've had a little more time to play with it (it's been too damn cold to work up a decent load)

Also, it's got a 9" twist which is slower than recommended for the 140+ grain VLD bullets (though they seem to work OK in mine)

They are easy (no more difficult that most) to re-barrel, but the shape of the action means you will have slightly smaller contour than an equivalent Remmy or Savage at the shank. The action goes from being angular, to a rounded taper to the diameter of the barrel. Also, unless you change to a top quality (Robertson Composite) after-market stock, (You won't find a cheap after-market stock to fit Tikka because of the recoil lug design) the contour of the re-barrel will have to match the factory contour anyway.

Yeah, the Tikka recoil 'slot' thinggy irritates me. I would not be at all surprised if you could fit a remington-style 'washer type' recoil lug between the barrel and receiver, or dig the lug outta the factory tupperware and have a smith tig it permanently into the slot on the receiver. Then fitting an aftermarket stock becomes a minor inletting and bedding job

260 is a nice caliber. I shoot an "Improved" version, which increases case capacity to about 6.5 x 55 size. With a 30" barrel I get about 2950 fps withthe 142 gr Sierra.

I use Winchester 308 brass because it has mare capacity than the Remington 260 cases.
