Hello,
I acquired a 1985 Ruger M77 in 338 win mag. Its the tang safety, cf. A beautiful rifle. I have a new Ruger factory stock for it. Going to get it cerakoted after this hunting season, as the bluing is a bit worn.
I am looking into getting a new barrel for it before I send it for cerakote. Are these common or tricky to find? I only have dealt with savage or rem 700 barrels.
Any difficulties with finding or re barreling an older M77?

Cheers

Installing a barrel on a 77 is very straight forward, an easy action to thread and fit a barrel to. I would suggest a stainless barrel... it will end up costing you more than your rifle and scope originally cost....

Thanks Dennis. I understand it will cost me. I am looking for the stainless. Are they easy to find? I haven't started shopping yet tbh. I also heard the timney triggers are a pain to install compared to a 700 drop in?

I re-barreled tang safety 338 win mag to a 416 Ruger with a custom barrel. I have the original 338 barrel still if you are interested in it. It was like new, however blued, not stainless.
You will have to look for a Ruger MK2 barrel if you want a factory take off stainless Ruger barrel. Which I also have two in 7 mag. Otherwise drop 500$ and get a custom barrel.
I wouldn't worry so much about it being stainless if you are cerekoting it.
Also, the tang safety triggers are excellent. Get a gunsmith to adjust it for you.
A pic of my old Ruger transformed.
Good luck!

That's a beauty of a rifle. Did you cerakote it? I'm going to give mine the wipe out treatment and see how the rifling looks. The crown is a bit worn so I'll see how it shoots and then go down the replacement road.

You can order stainless pre-contoured blanks from many different dealers... some are members on this website.

As with the majority of factory rifles Ruger 77 triggers can be worked and adjusted (most likely $50+) just fine for hunting use... no need to spend big bucks with replacements...
