As I am still trying to determine the way I want to go on my next project another thought has come into my little brain.

Has it been done and would it be worth it to re-barrel a Savage LR Hunter platform with a new custom barrel??

Also still toying with the idea of an improved version of the .338 LM.

They have been putting on prefits on Savage rifles for a decade and thousands of rifles. the chambering just has to fit the action.

I wouldn't bother with the 338LM improved. The true world increase is not that much vs the huge set up costs. A 338LM will shoot pretty darn far as is. Adding another 100fps and a few hundred $$ in dies seems a poor allocation of resources to me.

Grab that hunter which is such an awesome deal right now, bed it properly, load up and shoot. Odds are it will be sub moa with a good chance of 1/2 min. That is milk jug accuracy at a mile.

wind doping will be far more important at those distances.

if you still have coins after burning out that barrel, there are pleny of prefit options to choose from

You can't buy the parts for that much money. Get it, pitch the barrel if it doesn't shoot. You are still way ahead.

This is one of those times where a factory rifle exceeds the sum of the parts.

I have no interest in the LM but would be all over this gem if I did.

Well, a new barrel in the big picture isn't that big of an investment when you are playing the long range game with what these chamberings are capable of.As Jerry stated , not too sure if an improved version would be worth it for the small gains in performance.I am also pretty particular to my brass prep so I should be able to get the most out of the cases.

I did some numbers and a 300Gr SMK will stay supersonic past a mile, so that is likely all I will ever need.

I also measured my press and it'll work but will have to be some wiggle/jiggle to place the bullet in the neck.

The improved version would be more cost effective, brass will outlast the barrel.

Single load some Berger 300gr OTM's. 1 mile gets boring real fast.

We have been playing with some of the Hrn's too and they have been accurate. Not as aero as the bergers but they will fit in a mag so that is a bonus. Likely Hrn primary market was the mag fed end users and their 285 is a gem.

PRVI brass is available and this is a great value.
