I was thinking about building a light weight deer rifle for my daughter. Would it be feasible to re-barrel a Zastava M85 in 22-250 to 250 Savage? Would the action be long enough for it? I'm thinking that most loads would be with a standard flat base 100gr bullet. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, and if anyone has one would be great to know the maximum overall length the magazine can handle.

Why not just by the M85 in 7.62x39 and buy hunting loads or reload for hunting? It is comparable to a 30/30 in ballistics.Low recoil. Easy to find ammo. The money you save would buy a pile of ammo for her to practice with as well.

Like Sam said, it would be much easier and cheaper to just buy a gun in a smaller caliber.
Lots of good rifles out their chambered in 243, 7mm08, 30-30, 25-06, 6.5x55 etc

I think that would make a real nice 250 savage. You might be limited to 85-100 gr bullets because of mag length. I'v been thinking of getting a LH in 22-250 and seeing if Ron Smith would do a rebore. If I can find one. Corwin arms may still hav a full stock in 22-250 at a real good price.
