Earlier this year I've acquired a Savage 110BA in 338 Lapua. Since then I've probably put 400+ rounds through the factory 26" barrel with satisfactory results. I am interested in ordering a custom Kreiger barrel in 338 AI Lapua but I'm not sure what length to get it in. I thought a 32" may give an increase in velocity but I'm concerned that may create too much barrel 'whip'. My intentions are to order the new barrel this year and hope for delivery next year after I've had 1000+ rounds through the factory one. Anyone out there with advice or success with a particular brand would be greatly appreciated.

When I created the 338LAI I started with a 32" barrel and then started cutting it back in 1" increments to find out where the powder was 100% burned and where the velocity started to fall off in any significance.
29" is all you need.

Your 110 BA will NOT mag feed 338LAI

It is likely the shoulder angle (40 degrees) that interferes with mag feeding. This is a very common problem with AI cases.

I second Rick's suggestion that 29 or 30" would be a good option. As to whip, all barrels do it, but going as thick as you can tends to help. A #17 heavy Varmint contour would be a perfect match. If planning on using the 300's, particularly the outstanding 300 Berger, I would definitely suggest the 9.35" twist.

hello alberta tactical. Why cant the .338Lapua improved be cycled through the magazine? is it a width issue, or length?

There are tabs that retain the follower that the shoulder on the LAI hits against preventing the casing from feeding.
ALL mags that are currently available regardless of maker are too short for use with the Lapua and 300 gr bullets.
