possible to take a cooey 22lr rifle and re barrel to 22mag? Would it be just taking off old barrel and having a new barrel put on? Would the bolt have to be changed?
Any help is appreciated.

The bolt face is different....In my opinion the Cooey is not a good candidate for that alteration... and why do it... like to spend even more for ammo?

If you have enough of them, they can be welded into a pretty good anchor.

Now THAT HURTS! ! ! ! !

A few folks I know quite enjoy their Cooeys. And if I trip over a nice one some day I would not mind adding such a bit of Canadiana to my collection. When in decent shape they actually shoot nicely.

Did Cooey use the same bolt, other than the face mod to suit, and receiver for their .22Mag rifles?

Speaking of which with the slightly larger rim I don't think the firing pin will reach out far enough even if you do open up the face recess to fit the Magnum rim.

I don't think that Cooey ever made .22 Magnums.
I have heard of Cooeys being converted, but personally do not think that it is a good idea at all.

The bolt is too weak. If you want it's better to get a Remington 511. Bolt is much stronger. Also what you need to know the bore on .22 is bit tighter than 22 mag and what you can get is the casing expansion. I converted a single shot like that. Really accurate but has extraction problems.

I'll have to tell my brother about rechambering a Cooey to 22 Mag.

The one Wolf rechambered for him about 15 years ago has probably seen a few hundred rounds since.

Must be about ready to let go..................

A lot depends on the Cooey model. The .22 Mag's case is nearly a half inch longer than a LR and may not cycle through a Cooey. Will not through any Cooey semi-auto.
There's no such thing as just re-chambering from a .22 LR to a .22 Mag. The Mag is not just a longer LR. Has a different bullet diameter for one. Isn't going to bother the bolt though. The Mag is not powerful enough to damage anything except a ground hog's head.

Sorry for quoting myself but in reading this again the various LR and Mag convertible guns flashed into mind. So clearly I'm out to lunch on this point that I presented above.

I suppose some with rather pin like firing pins might be an issue. But a lot of the guns use a more or less flat blade like end on the firing pins and those would reach out far enough just fine.

The question has been asked often. Been travelling in China of late and have been going through the old gunsmithign post. Here is an early posting from back in the day about just this kind of thing. Post #7 talks about someone who actually did a cooey 75 with help from a gunsmith.

Here is a recently completed ad from someone who sold their modified Cooey 82 22mag http:// usedfirearms.ca/ads/cooey-model-82-in-22magnum/
I was too late to get it, otherwise I would have just to see how it was done at the very least.
