I'am looking at re-barreling my Rem 700 300win mag to a 257wby question is is it going to be as easy as just swapping the bbl's or am I gonna have to get a new bolt as well? Seeing as the base Diameter for the 300 is .513 and the 257 is .512. Is this small diff gonna make any difference at all or am I opening up a can of worms?

Thanks Guys for the info!

You could also just buy a new weatherby vanguard in 257 weatherby for about the same price as getting a new barrel. Just an idea.

Sorry, meant to quote Blargon

Since when is a Howa 1500 better than a 700 Rem?

To the OP. Rebarrel, it's a no brainer job, do not have to modify anything else at all. I have bought very inexpensive take off barrels from a couple of places (Western Gun Parts for one) and they have worked out excellent. You also shouldn't have to buy a reamer as most reputable gunsmiths should have a 257 Wby reamer, it's not like it's your own design wildcat. I have even bought take offs in the exact chambering and shank thread I wanted (easiest of all to find is the 700) and just screwed 'em on and headspaced 'em. Wouldn't recommend buying a 257 Wby chambered take off though, I'd look for something in a Roberts or 25-06 and redo the chamber, that way you get a new throat. I'm thinking you should be able to get it done for under 350 bucks this way.

Just a thought

Just my opinion. Stiff action with integral recoil lug, one piece bolt and handle, an M-16 style extractor with some meat on it, and real bluing that you don't have to pay extra for.

Ya, nothing wrong with a Howa action, good strong action but a little heavy. I'm just Rem 700 fanatic so I thought I would give you a dig............:>) lol

Ya I used to be too, then realized there were other options that offered me more bang for the $$. :D

For what it is, the Rem 700 should be at a lower price point...
